We are an expanding commercial trucking fleet committed to high-efficiency freight routing and exceptional service. As our network grows, we are seeking a sharp, aggressive, and highly organized Freight Dispatcher specializing in LTL scheduling, backhaul optimization, and broker negotiations.
Job Summary
The Freight Dispatcher / LTL Load Planner is responsible for maximizing truck utilization, reducing deadhead miles, and ensuring our fleet runs at peak profitability. You will source backhaul loads from load boards, negotiate rates with brokers, fit partials into consolidated LTL schedules, and maintain constant contact with drivers to ensure seamless pickups and deliveries.
Key Responsibilities
1. Load Board Sourcing & Backhaul Optimization
- Actively monitor freight load boards (DAT, Truckstop, etc.) to source profitability-focused backhaul loads for returning lanes.
- Minimize empty deadhead miles by strategically matching available truck capacity with high-paying freight.
- Analyze lane rates, spot market trends, and seasonal volume to select the best available freight.
2. Broker Negotiations & Rate Confirmation
- Communicate directly with freight brokers to negotiate competitive spot market rates and secure bookings.
- Review and execute Rate Confirmations (Ratecons), ensuring all accessorials, detention terms, and special requirements are clearly documented.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with preferred brokers for recurring lanes.
3. LTL Scheduling & Route Planning
- Build, consolidate, and optimize Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) routes to ensure maximum cube-out and weight capacity per truck.
- Schedule and sequence multiple pickup and delivery appointments across LTL lines without compromising transit windows or driver HOS (Hours of Service).
- Coordinate door-to-door logistics, ensuring clear stop-by-stop instructions for drivers.
4. Driver Communication & Fleet Tracking
- Dispatch load assignments, routes, and special instructions clearly to drivers.
- Monitor driver progress in real time, proactively addressing delays, weather disruptions, or shipper/receiver issues.
- Maintain accurate tracking logs and communicate status updates to brokers and internal teams.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: 2+ years of active freight dispatching experience, with specific experience in LTL load planning and backhaul sourcing.
- Board Mastery: Proven experience navigating DAT, Truckstop, and other major spot market load boards.
- Negotiation Skills: Strong sales and negotiation skills with a track record of securing profitable broker rates.
- Logistics Acumen: High proficiency in route planning, transit times, weight/cube calculations, and DOT Hours of Service (HOS) regulations.
- Communication: Fast, clear, and assertive communication style across phone and email.
Benefits & Compensation
- Schedule: Day shift, Monday to Friday (with occasional on-call flexibility during transit windows)
- Pay: Commensurate Based on Experience
Pay: $51,121.66 - $61,565.88 per year
