We are seeking an Assistant Safety Engineer to join our safety and risk management team.
This is an entry-level, developmental position for someone who wants to learn, grow, and build a career in construction safety.
This position supports safety activities across heavy civil, utility, mining, site development, and construction operations. The Assistant Safety Engineer is not expected to be a technical safety expert on day one. This role is designed for someone who is dependable, coachable, curious, and willing to learn through field experience, mentoring, formal training, and progressively more complex assignments.
The successful candidate will spend significant time in the field working with crews to better understand their work, the hazards they face, and how safety applies in real construction environments. As knowledge and experience develop, this person will learn to recognize hazards, assist with jobsite safety observations, support corrective action follow-up, help maintain safety supplies and equipment, and support the company’s safety culture.
We do not expect you to be an expert. We do expect you to show up, ask questions, learn, communicate respectfully, and help the field work safely.
Responsibilities
- Spend significant time in the field supporting active construction, utility, mining, and heavy civil operations.
- Work with crews, foremen, superintendents, project managers, and safety leadership to better understand field operations and jobsite hazards.
- Assist with jobsite safety observations, basic inspections, safety supply checks, and follow-up activities.
- Learn to recognize hazards through field exposure, mentoring, training, and practical experience.
- Help identify obvious unsafe conditions, missing PPE, missing signage, barricade needs, housekeeping concerns, and other basic jobsite issues.
- Communicate safety concerns to the Safety Engineer, supervisors, or safety leadership in a timely and respectful manner.
- Support toolbox talks, job briefings, safety meetings, and training events through setup, materials, attendance tracking, and documentation.
- Help maintain safety supplies, PPE, signage, first aid supplies, barricades, fire extinguishers, confined space equipment, fall protection equipment, gas monitors, and related materials.
- Assist with loading, unloading, moving, organizing, and transporting safety equipment and supplies.
- Assist with safety forms, observation reports, corrective action logs, training records, inventory records, photos, and other safety documentation.
- Learn company safety policies, OSHA requirements, MSHA-related requirements where applicable, and field safety practices.
- Participate in assigned training in areas such as lifting and rigging, confined space, fall protection, trench safety, machine controls, heavy equipment safety, OSHA, MSHA, first aid/CPR, and other specialty risk areas.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to report to work early and consistently.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to learn safety, field operations, equipment, regulations, and company procedures.
- Ability to work outdoors in active construction, mining, utility, and heavy civil environments.
- Ability to drive frequently between jobsites and company locations.
- Ability to lift, carry, load, unload, and move items weighing more than 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress situations.
- Ability to treat employees, supervisors, customers, subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, and visitors with dignity and respect.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous construction, utility, heavy civil, mining, or safety experience.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- First aid/CPR training.
- Microsoft Office experience, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Experience with HCSS, Vector, or other safety/training systems.
- Experience with inventory, purchasing, ordering, or supply tracking.
- Bilingual ability, especially English/Spanish, is helpful.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements
This position requires frequent field work, early start times, driving between jobsites, working outdoors in heat, humidity, dust, noise, rain, and other weather conditions, walking uneven terrain and active work zones, wearing required PPE, and moving safety equipment such as tripods, hoists, rescue equipment, harnesses, barricades, signage, PPE, and supply boxes.

Schedule
