As we prepare for our next phase of strategic growth, we recognize that building a strong foundation for our people operations is critical. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Human Resources Manager to be our first dedicated HR hire. This is a unique opportunity to build an HR department from the ground up, shaping the culture, policies, and procedures that will guide our company into the future.
Role Overview
The Human Resources Manager will serve as the sole HR practitioner and report directly to the executive leadership team. This role is highly entrepreneurial and requires a strategic thinker who is also willing to roll up their sleeves and handle day-to-day administrative tasks. The successful candidate will be responsible for establishing foundational HR systems, ensuring legal compliance, managing the full employee lifecycle, and fostering a positive, high-performance workplace culture.
Key Responsibilities
HR Infrastructure and Policy Development
As the sole HR leader, you will be responsible for building the company's HR infrastructure from scratch. This includes researching, drafting, and implementing the Employee Handbook, ensuring all policies align with federal, state, and local employment laws. You will establish standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all HR functions implement a Human Resources Information System (HRIS) tailored to the needs of a growing small business, which is targeted for a Q4 rollout.
Talent Acquisition and Onboarding
You will manage the entire recruitment lifecycle to support our growth objectives. This involves collaborating with leadership to define staffing needs, drafting compelling job descriptions, sourcing candidates, and conducting interviews. Once top talent is hired, you will design and execute a structured onboarding program that integrates new employees into our culture, ensures all compliance paperwork is completed, and sets them up for long-term success.
Benefits Administration and Payroll Oversight
You will serve as the primary point of contact for benefits enrollment, vendor management, and employee inquiries. This includes evaluating current offerings and recommending competitive benefits packages to attract and retain talent.
Employee Relations and Performance Management
Fostering a positive and engaging work environment is a core component of this role. You will handle all employee relations matters, providing guidance and conflict resolution when necessary. You will also design and implement our formal performance management system, establishing goal-setting frameworks, regular review cycles, and training programs to support continuous employee development.
Compliance and Risk Management
Ensuring the company remains compliant with all applicable labor laws is critical. You will proactively monitor regulatory changes, conduct periodic internal audits (e.g., I-9/E-Verify compliance, worker classification), and update company policies accordingly. You will also manage unemployment claims and ensure all necessary employment records are securely maintained.
What We're Looking For
Background
- 5+ years of progressive HR experience, preferably as an HR Generalist or HR Manager. Experience in a startup or small business environment building HR functions from scratch is highly desirable.
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
- SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification is strongly preferred.
- Deep understanding of employment laws, compliance requirements, and HR best practices.
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills. Ability to operate strategically while managing tactical administrative duties.
- Proficiency with HRIS platforms and standard office productivity tools.
Pay: $85,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
