Position Summary
The Delta Shelter Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day operation of Second Chance Humane Society's Delta Shelter. The position provides direct animal care, supervises one part-time Animal Care Specialist, maintains accurate shelter records, assists members of the public, and ensures that the shelter operates in accordance with Second Chance Humane Society policies and applicable state regulations.
The Shelter Supervisor is expected to perform the majority of daily animal care functions while maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming shelter environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Animal Care
- Provide daily care for shelter dogs and cats, including feeding, watering, exercising, enrichment, and monitoring health and behavior.
- Clean, disinfect, and sanitize animal housing, kennels, cages, equipment, and common areas in accordance with established disease prevention protocols.
- Observe animals for illness, injury, or behavioral concerns and report findings to appropriate veterinary personnel.
- Assist with animal intake, vaccinations, routine treatments, transportation, and transfers as assigned.
- Ensure humane handling of all animals in accordance with organizational standards.
Shelter Operations
- Open and close the shelter each business day.
- Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and professional facility.
- Monitor inventory levels and order routine shelter supplies as directed.
- Ensure compliance with PACFA regulations and all organizational policies and procedures.
- Coordinate routine maintenance needs and report facility concerns.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Enter and maintain accurate animal records using the organization's shelter management software.
- Process intake, adoption, transfer, reclaim, and medical documentation.
- Maintain required reports and shelter statistics.
- Handle routine telephone calls, email correspondence, and administrative paperwork.
Public Relations and Customer Service
- Assist members of the public with adoptions, owner surrenders, lost and found animals, and general animal welfare inquiries.
- Represent Second Chance Humane Society in a courteous, professional, and compassionate manner.
- Educate visitors regarding responsible pet ownership and available shelter services.
Supervision
- Direct and supervise one part-time Animal Care Specialist.
- Assign daily work responsibilities.
- Provide orientation and ongoing coaching to ensure quality animal care and customer service.
- Monitor employee performance and communicate concerns and recommendations to the Executive Director.
Other Duties
- Participate in adoption events and community outreach activities as assigned.
- Assist other Second Chance Humane Society departments when operational needs require.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Experience working with companion animals preferred.
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and the ability to learn shelter management software.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Valid Colorado driver's license and acceptable driving record.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of basic animal husbandry and disease prevention practices.
- Ability to safely handle dogs and cats of varying sizes, breeds, and temperaments.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public, volunteers, and coworkers.
- Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to maintain professionalism during emotionally challenging situations.

Physical Requirements
This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, reaching, and repetitive motion. The employee must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently and heavier loads with assistance. The position requires working both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and involves exposure to animal dander, cleaning chemicals, noise, odors, and occasionally fractious animals.
Working Conditions
The Delta Shelter operates seven days per week. The Shelter Supervisor must be available to work a flexible schedule that may include weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings as required to meet operational needs.
