Essential/Primary Responsibilities:
- Implements and/or directs others to implement care based on nursing standards.
- Administers patient medicine.
- Evaluates effectiveness of progress towards patient outcomes.
- Manages emergency patient situations following established protocols, coordinating and accessing appropriate health team member and resources and documenting events.
- Documents relevant patient care information demonstrating the implementation of the nursing process and emphasis on achievement of patient outcomes.
- Secures, sets up and prepares the operating room equipment, instruments and supplies. Arranges instruments, tables, stands, and other articles in specified order. Adjust equipment within the operating room to meet the needs of the surgeon and the operative requirements.
- Identifies patient and significant other’s learning needs and implements plans to meet those needs.
- Assist physicians in the intra-operative phase in order to ensure quality service.
- Provides safe therapeutic quality care to patients utilizing the nursing process and nursing diagnosis in a timely manner and by setting appropriate priorities.
- Coordinates nursing interventions to enhance achievement of expected outcomes and to ensure readiness for discharge.
- Takes part in pre and post-op phone calls and communicates any problems to the appropriate person.
- Maintains competencies to function in RN role within specific area. (Ex. OR circulator-identification, counting and care of instrumentation and sponges, skin preparation of surgical site).
- Maintain competencies in conscious sedation administration and monitoring of sedated patients. Including airway protections, assessment and support of sedated patients.
- Protect sedated and anesthetized patient by identifying safety hazards such as electrical equipment, pressure points and by minimizing exposure to maintain privacy and body temperature.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Maintains safe environment for patients, co-workers and self.
- Expertise in safety principals, asepsis, sterile technique and universal precautions.
- Assesses anticipates and implements appropriate care through out the surgical process.
- Position may include hazardous waste handling and use of proper protective wear.
- Utilizing nursing care standards when planning and implementing patient care.
- Communicates appropriate information regarding patient conditions to those who require the information including surgeons, anesthesia, management, and other staff.
- Deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
- Adheres to policy and procedures.
Knowledge and Experience/Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse, issued by the PA State Board of Nursing.
- Certification in OR nursing or PACU nursing is preferred.
- CPR certification.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
Skills and Experience:
- Ability to use discretion in handling PHI. (protected health information)
- Two (2) years of Pre-Post Operative or Operating Room experience, preferably in an Ambulatory Surgery Center setting.
