Job Summary
The Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse is an expert in the acute and rehabilitative care of individuals with select disorders of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary and integumentary systems. Serves as a practitioner with advances clinical skills and demonstrated leadership ability, a role model, educator, consultant, resource person and researcher. The scope of practice at Montefiore Nyack Hospital encompasses the care of persons with abdominal stomas, draining wounds, fistula, pressure sores/dermal ulcers and fecal/urinary incontinence.
Essential Functions
- JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:
Demonstrates the required job specific technical/professional knowledge, skills and abilities. *
1. Develops standards of care and teaching plans for entrerostomal therapy including: ostomies, draining wounds/fistulas, pressure sores, dermal ulcers and fecal/urinary incontinence. The standards and teaching plans display an understanding of developmental needs of the patients.
2. Implements appropriate interventions to facilitate the physiological, social and emotional adjustments of individuals following ostomy surgery. Coordinates and facilitates support groups for ostomy patients and families.
3. Acts as a consultant in the evaluation and care of patients with draining wounds and fistulas, pressure sores and urinary and fecal incontinence.
4. Continually reviews and evaluates enterostomal/wound management care products for cost effectiveness, quality and value.
5. In conjunction and collaboration with skin care committee reviews and revises wound management policy and protocol to changing technology, current needs of Nyack Hospital patient population and recommended US Government Agency for Health Care policy and Research Guidelines.
6. Initiates, develops and/or participates in research activities related to enterostomal/wound management nursing practice.
7. Performs statistical analysis of pressure ulcer incidence and develops action plans to ensure reduction.

Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree Preferred
- Associate Degree
- 3 – 5 years' experience
- Specialized education in the field of Enterostomal Therapy
- Registered Nurse New York - New York State Board of Nursing Required
- BLS Basic Life Support - American Heart Association Required
- Wound Certification required within 2 years. Required
- Certification in Enterostomal Therapy preferred. Preferred
