Position Summary
The Director of K–8 Afterschool Programs is responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing high-quality afterschool enrichment programs for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. The Director ensures that all programming provides a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment that supports students' academic achievement, social-emotional development, leadership skills, creativity, and overall well-being. The Director also oversees daily program operations, including snack distribution, staff supervision, and compliance with organizational policies and applicable state regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan, develop, and oversee engaging afterschool programs for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade.
- Design and implement enrichment activities that support literacy, mathematics, STEM, arts, music, technology, physical wellness, leadership, career exploration, financial literacy, and social-emotional learning.
- Recruit, hire, train, supervise, mentor, and evaluate teachers, tutors, club facilitators, coaches, and support staff.
- Ensure instructional and enrichment activities are age-appropriate, engaging, and aligned with educational standards and organizational goals.
- Develop daily and seasonal program schedules that include academic support, homework assistance, enrichment activities, recreation, and healthy snacks.
- Oversee the daily distribution of nutritious snacks, ensuring compliance with food safety standards, organizational policies, and any applicable federal, state, or local nutrition program requirements.
- Coordinate snack ordering, inventory management, storage, and distribution to ensure adequate supplies are available at all program sites.
- Maintain accurate records related to snack distribution, inventory, and program compliance, as required.
- Foster a positive, safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that promotes student engagement and success.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with families, school administrators, community organizations, and other stakeholders.
- Monitor student attendance, behavior, participation, and academic progress, implementing positive behavior support strategies as needed.
- Coordinate special events, family engagement nights, educational field trips, showcases, and community service initiatives.
- Manage instructional materials, supplies, equipment, and program resources.
- Ensure compliance with state licensing requirements, child safety regulations, organizational policies, required staff clearances, and health and safety procedures.
- Assist with planning professional development and ongoing training initiatives for staff to enhance instructional quality, student engagement, and operational excellence.
- Evaluate program outcomes using attendance, student achievement, surveys, and performance data to drive continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with organizational leadership to expand and strengthen afterschool programming.
- Perform other duties as assigned by executive leadership.
Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor's degree in Education, Elementary Education, Child Development, Educational Leadership, Recreation, Human Services, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Minimum of three to five years of experience working with students in Kindergarten through 8th grade in an educational, childcare, or youth development setting.
- At least two years of supervisory or program management experience.
- Strong knowledge of child and adolescent development, instructional practices, classroom management, and youth engagement.
- Experience managing youth development programs.
- Excellent leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and educational technology platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
- Pennsylvania Teaching Certification or Educational Leadership Certification preferred.
- Experience administering child nutrition or afterschool meal/snack programs is a plus.
- CPR and First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Knowledge of Pennsylvania child safety requirements and mandatory staff clearances.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to actively supervise students in classrooms, cafeterias, gyms, playgrounds, and community settings.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and participate in student activities for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry program materials and snack supplies weighing up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to respond quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.
Work Environment
The Director of the K–8 Afterschool Program must work on location. The position may require occasional evening hours to support family engagement events, staff training, special programs, and community partnerships.
Pay: $28.00 - $32.00 per hour
