Medical Assistant (Medical Clinic) – Part-Time (24 Hours per/Wk.)
Reports To: Director of Clinic Operations, Medical Director, and Senior Medical Assistant (Medical Clinic)
Works Closely With: Volunteer Medical Director, Volunteer Nurses, Medical Providers, Students, Residents, and Volunteers

Hourly Range: $ 19.00 - $20.40/hour
Schedule: 24 hours per week. Standard schedule is Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Hours may be adjusted to support designated evening clinics and clinic operations.
Position Summary
The Medical Assistant (Medical Clinic) supports the mission of the Gary Burnstein Community Health Clinic (GBCHC) by providing high-quality clinical and administrative support services to uninsured and underserved patients. This position plays a vital role in ensuring efficient clinic operations, supporting volunteer providers and nurses, and delivering an exceptional patient experience.
The Medical Assistant provides direct patient care, performs phlebotomy and point-of-care testing, administers vaccines, supports immunization initiatives, manages assigned Athena in-basket workflows, assists with patient results communication and follow-up, maintains accurate documentation within Athena and the Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MCIR), and supports volunteer, student, and patient care activities.
This position serves as the primary Medical Assistant for designated evening clinics and works collaboratively with the Senior Medical Assistant and clinic leadership to support patient care, clinic readiness, patient communications, and quality improvement initiatives.
Principal Duties and ResponsibilitiesDirect Patient Care
- Prepare patients for examinations, treatments, and procedures.
- Obtain and document vital signs, medical histories, medication reconciliations, and chief complaints.
- Room patients and assist providers during patient visits.
- Provide patient education and instructions as directed by providers and nurses.
- Support patient referrals, follow-up appointments, and care coordination activities.
- Document patient interactions accurately and timely within the electronic medical record.
- Ensure compliance with infection prevention, safety, and clinical protocols.
- Support efficient patient flow and patient-centered care throughout clinic operations.
Patient Results and In-Basket Management
- Monitor assigned Athena in-basket messages, work queues, and provider task lists.
- Assist with timely review, routing, and processing of patient messages, refill requests, laboratory notifications, referral communications, and provider tasks.
- Communicate normal and provider-approved patient results in accordance with clinic protocols.
- Assist with patient notification and follow-up related to laboratory and diagnostic testing.
- Document patient communications accurately and timely within the electronic medical record.
- Coordinate follow-up appointments, repeat testing, referrals, and patient outreach as directed.
- Escalate abnormal results, urgent patient concerns, and clinically significant findings to the Senior Medical Assistant, providers, or nurses as appropriate.
- Assist with tracking outstanding patient communications and unresolved in-basket items.
- Support timely closure and management of Medical Clinic in-basket workflows.
- Collaborate with the Senior Medical Assistant to ensure continuity of care and resolution of outstanding laboratory and diagnostic follow-up needs.
Phlebotomy and Clinical Support
- Perform phlebotomy and specimen collection in accordance with clinic policies and procedures.
- Conduct point-of-care testing, including glucose, A1C, urinalysis, pregnancy testing, and other approved testing.
- Prepare and process specimens for laboratory testing.
- Assist providers with treatments and procedures as appropriate.
- Maintain examination rooms, equipment, and clinical supplies.
- Support efficient patient flow and clinic operations.
- Assist with laboratory quality assurance activities and specimen management.
Immunization Program Support
- Administer vaccines in accordance with provider orders, clinic protocols, CDC recommendations, and applicable state regulations.
- Provide patient education regarding immunizations and vaccine-preventable diseases.
- Review immunization histories and identify vaccine gaps.
- Document vaccine administration accurately within Athena and the Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MCIR).
- Utilize MCIR to review immunization histories, verify vaccination status, identify vaccine gaps, and support patient care activities.
- Assist with immunization outreach, reminders, and follow-up activities.
- Support seasonal and special vaccination initiatives, including influenza, COVID-19, RSV, shingles, pneumococcal, hepatitis, and other adult immunization programs.
- Collaborate with Pharmacy, providers, nurses, and clinic leadership to support vaccine-related services.
Student and Volunteer Support
- Assist with onboarding and orientation activities for students, residents, and volunteers.
- Serve as a resource for students and volunteers during clinic sessions.
- Support educational experiences and learning activities within the Medical Clinic.
- Promote a welcoming and positive environment for volunteers and learners.
- Assist the Senior Medical Assistant with volunteer and student support activities as needed.
Evening Clinic Operations
- Serve as the primary Medical Assistant for designated evening clinic sessions.
- Support volunteer physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, students, residents, and clinical volunteers.
- Coordinate patient flow and assist with clinic readiness during evening sessions.
- Assist with patient follow-up activities as directed.
- Support efficient and patient-centered clinic operations during evening clinic hours.
- Assist with closing responsibilities and preparation for the next clinic session.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Maintain clinical supply inventory and communicate supply needs.
- Assist with stocking examination rooms and clinical areas.
- Support quality improvement initiatives and patient safety activities.
- Assist with audits, reports, and operational projects as assigned.
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and organizational initiatives.
- Maintain confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QualificationsRequired
- Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program or equivalent clinical training.
- Minimum of one (1) year of Medical Assistant experience.
- Experience performing phlebotomy and specimen collection.
- Experience in primary care, family medicine, ambulatory care, community health, or similar clinical setting.
- Experience working with electronic medical record systems.
- Current CPR certification.
- Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
Preferred
- Current Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, CCMA, NCMA, or equivalent).
- Experience administering vaccines.
- Experience using the Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MCIR).
- Experience managing electronic medical record in-baskets and patient communications.
- Athena EMR experience.
- Experience working with students, residents, or volunteers.
- Experience working with underserved or vulnerable populations.
- Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency.

Physical Requirements
