Job Summary:
The Zeman Robotic Welding Programmer / Supervisor is responsible for programming, coordinating, and supervising the operation of the Zeman Robotic Welding Cell to support the efficient fabrication of structural steel assemblies and components. This position develops and maintains robotic welding programs using engineering models, fabrication drawings, and project specifications to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient production.
Serving as the primary technical expert for robotic welding operations, this role works closely with Engineering, Detailing, StruMIS Administration, Production Planning, Quality, Maintenance, and Production teams to optimize robotic welding performance, improve equipment utilization, and maintain exceptional welding quality.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, modify, validate, and optimize programs for the Robotic Welding Cell machine.
- Convert Tekla Structures models, fabrication drawings, and engineering specifications into robot-ready welding programs.
- Program weld paths, weld sequences, welding parameters, robotic positioning, and production logic.
- Validate welding programs prior to production to ensure compliance with AWS D1.1, engineering specifications, and customer requirements.
- Conduct first-piece verification and support production startup for new and revised programs.
- Optimize robotic welding cycles to improve throughput, reduce weld time, minimize distortion, and maximize productivity.
- Maintain programming libraries, welding schedules, tooling data, robot parameters, and software backups.
- Coordinate programming priorities with Production Planning to support fabrication schedules and customer delivery commitments.
- Implement engineering revisions, RFIs, and drawing changes within robotic welding programs.
- Provide technical support to robotic cell operators, supervisors, and maintenance personnel to resolve programming and automation issues.
- Verify robotic welding programs produce assemblies that meet dimensional, structural, and cosmetic quality requirements.
- Analyze programming-related defects and implement corrective actions to reduce rework and scrap.
- Optimize welding parameters to improve weld consistency, penetration, heat input, and cycle times.
- Supervise daily programming activities and establish priorities based on production requirements.
- Train, mentor, and develop programming Zeman machine operators.
- Develop programming standards, documentation, and best practices.
- Support employee performance, technical development, and cross-training initiatives.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Five or more years of experience programming robotic welding systems or automated manufacturing equipment.
- Experience with Zeman robotic welding software is highly preferred.
- Previous experience leading technical personnel and coordinating programming activities
- Experience in structural steel fabrication or heavy industrial manufacturing
- Previous supervisory or technical leadership experience preferred.
- Experience with Tekla Structures, StruMIS, and welding automation systems preferred.
- Education: Manufacturing Technology, Welding Technology, Engineering Technology, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field preferred. Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.
- Knowledge of welding procedures, weld symbols, and fabrication drawings.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex programming and manufacturing issues
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects while supporting production schedules
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull objects weighing up to [e.g., 50 pounds] regularly.
- Ability to work in various environmental conditions common to a manufacturing facility (e.g., varying temperatures, noise levels, and potential for dust/debris).
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for operating equipment and handling supplies.
Work Schedule:
- Monday-Friday, 1st Shift 7:00 am – 4:00 pm
- Depending on production needs, extended hours may be required.
