Position Summary
The Certified Peer Support Specialist provides recovery-focused services to individuals experiencing mental health and/or substance use challenges.
Peer Support Specialists serve as mentors, advocates, role models, and recovery coaches by helping individuals develop skills, access community resources, navigate systems of care, and remain engaged in treatment and recovery.
This position serves clients throughout Union and Mecklenburg Counties and requires community-based work, travel, and field visits.
Essential Responsibilities
- Build supportive, recovery-focused relationships with clients
- Share lived experience appropriately to promote hope and recovery
- Assist clients with developing personal recovery goals and action plans
- Support clients in strengthening coping skills and self-management strategies
- Connect clients to housing, employment, education, transportation, healthcare, and community resources
- Help clients navigate behavioral health, healthcare, and social service systems
- Assist clients with appointment attendance and treatment engagement
- Provide support following hospitalization, crisis events, or setbacks
- Promote community integration and independent living skills
- Collaborate with therapists, medication providers, probation officers, DSS, and community partners when appropriate
- Participate in treatment team meetings and person-centered planning
- Complete timely and accurate documentation in compliance with Medicaid, MCO, CARF, and agency requirements

Required Qualifications
- Current North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) Certification
- High School Diploma or GED
- Self-identify as a person in recovery from a mental health and/or substance use disorder
- Stable recovery and ability to appropriately utilize lived experience in service delivery
- Valid North Carolina Driver's License
- Reliable transportation
- Ability to travel throughout Union and Mecklenburg Counties
- Submit to background check
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Forensic Peer Support Specialist (CFPSS)
- Experience working with justice-involved individuals
- Experience working with probation-referred clients
- Experience supporting individuals with substance use disorders
- Experience working with community resource agencies
- Experience using electronic health records (EHR)
- Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply
Work Environment
This is a community-based position. Services are provided in client homes, community settings, treatment facilities, recovery programs, and other approved locations throughout Union and Mecklenburg Counties.
Peer Support Specialists are expected to attend in-person staff meetings, trainings, supervision sessions, and other required events at the HumanWorks Collective office in Monroe, NC.
Some evening/weekend appointments may be required based on client needs.
