Job Overview
We are seeking a highly responsible, safety-conscious, and energetic Jet Ski Tow Operator to join our water sports team. In this role, your primary responsibility is to provide a thrilling yet entirely safe tow-tubing experience for our guests. You will operate commercial personal watercraft (PWC), deliver clear safety briefings, manage high-risk marine environments, and ensure that all equipment is meticulously maintained.
Key Responsibilities1. Safe Watercraft & Tow Operations
- Controlled Towing: Safely pilot a Jet Ski while towing guests on a multi-person tube float, maintaining smooth throttle control and managing wake impact.
- Speed Regulation: Strictly regulate speeds based on passenger age, comfort, water conditions, and company policy (typically 15–20 mph).
- Spotter Coordination: Work alongside an on-board rear-facing spotter (or utilize dual marine mirrors where legally permitted) to maintain constant visual contact with the tube.
- Perimeter Awareness: Maintain a wide, safe distance from other vessels, docks, swimmers, shorelines, and shallow water hazards.
2. Guest Safety & Instruction
- Pre-Ride Briefings: Educate guests on proper tube positioning, holding techniques, and mandatory marine hand signals (e.g., thumbs up for faster, thumbs down for slower, patting the head to return to dock).
- Gear Compliance: Ensure every rider is fitted correctly with a properly sized, U.S. Coast Guard-approved Life Jacket (PFD) before entering the water.
- Incident Management: Respond instantly and calmly if a rider falls off the tube, executing a tight, slow, and safe circle-back maneuver to shield the swimmer from other boat traffic.
3. Equipment & Inspection Checklist
- Pre-Operating Checks: Perform daily inspections on Jet Ski fluid levels, fuel, and jet pump intakes to ensure they are clear of debris, weeds, or ropes.
- Tow Line Integrity: Inspect tow ropes daily for fraying, knots, or wear. Ensure tow ropes are the legally required length (typically 50–85 feet) and securely attached to the PWC's designated tow eyelet.
- Bladder & Tube Care: Properly inflate tow tubes to correct PSI levels and check for air leaks, handle tears, or structural weakness.
Job Requirements & QualificationsMinimum Requirements
- Age Restriction: Must be at least 18 years of age (or older, depending on local commercial insurance policies).
- Boating License: Possess a valid State Boater Safety Certification / Boat License and a clean driving/boating record.
- Swimming Proficiency: Must be an exceptionally strong swimmer, capable of assisting distressed guests in open water.
- Certifications: First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications are highly preferred (and often mandatory within 30 days of hire).
Physical Demands & Environment
- Ability to stand, sit, and handle the physical impact of riding waves on a Jet Ski for extended shifts (4–8 hours).
- Must be able to lift up to 50–80 lbs (handling heavy, water-logged tubes and moving watercraft).
- Comfortable working entirely outdoors in direct sunlight, high heat, and changing marine weather conditions.
Soft Skills
- Extreme Situational Awareness: An active mind that constantly scans for hidden hazards on the water.
- Strong Communication: A friendly, firm demeanor. You must be able to confidently command authority when safety rules are being ignored by guests.
- Crucial Marine Compliance Note: Most state laws dictate that if a PWC is towing a tube, the watercraft must be rated for at least 3 people (1 for the driver, 1 for the mandatory rear-facing spotter, and 1 empty seat to rescue the tuber if needed). Ensure your team structure accounts for this rule during daily operations.
