Responsibilities
Tree climbers are responsible for safely climbing and working in trees to perform tasks such as pruning, trimming, and removing branches or entire trees. They inspect trees for diseases or pests, ensuring overall tree health and safety. Tree climbers also use and maintain specialized equipment, such as ropes, harnesses, and chainsaws, and follow safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries.
Basic qualifications
1. Physical Fitness:
- Strength and Stamina: Ability to climb, lift, and handle heavy equipment and tree limbs.
- Agility and Coordination: Ability to navigate branches and maintain balance at heights.
2. Training and Certification:
- Formal Training: Completion of arboriculture or forestry programs can be beneficial.
- Certification: Obtaining certification from organizations like the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) can enhance job prospects. Certifications such as Certified Arborist, Tree Worker Climber Specialist, or Utility Specialist are valuable.
- First Aid and CPR: Training in first aid and CPR is often required for safety reasons.
3. Skills and Knowledge:
- Climbing Techniques: Proficiency in using ropes, harnesses, and other climbing equipment.
- Tree Biology and Care: Understanding of tree species, growth patterns, and health care.
- Pruning and Removal Techniques: Knowledge of proper pruning methods and safe tree removal practices.
- Equipment Handling: Ability to safely operate chainsaws, chippers, and other tree care equipment.
4. Safety Awareness:
- Knowledge of Safety Protocols: Understanding and adherence to safety guidelines and protocols to prevent accidents.
- Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Consistent use of PPE such as helmets, gloves, and protective eyewear.
5. Other Qualifications:
- Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with team members and clients.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to assess tree conditions and determine the best course of action.
- Licensing: A valid driver’s license is often required, especially for positions that involve traveling to different job sites.

- MUST have at least 3 years experience as a climber
