Griffin Welding, LLC is an AISC-certified structural steel fabrication company founded in 2016 and headquartered in Waterbury, CT. Our team of 30+ professionals fabricates structural steel for DOT highway infrastructure, bridge components, and miscellaneous metals projects for clients nationwide. We hold AISC certification in Building, Highway Component, and Simple Bridge categories. We run a clean, organized shop with active DOT contracts and a strong pipeline of work.
POSITION SUMMARY
We are looking for a skilled Welder/Fabricator to join our production team. In this role you will fabricate structural steel assemblies from engineered drawings, working to AISC and AWS standards on active DOT, bridge, and miscellaneous metals contracts. This is a hands-on, full-time shop floor position for someone who takes pride in the quality of their work and wants to be part of a growing company building real infrastructure.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Read and interpret structural shop drawings, weld symbols, and cut lists to fabricate steel assemblies to specification
- Perform FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) and dual-shield welding on structural steel components including plate, wide flange, HSS tube, pipe, angle, and channel
- Perform fit-up, layout, and assembly of structural steel parts prior to welding
- Follow all Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) posted at your station — no deviation without authorization
- Maintain material identification (job number and part number) on all pieces throughout the fabrication process
- Perform self-inspection of welds and dimensions before presenting work to Quality Control
- Red Tag any work you believe is non-conforming and notify your foreman immediately — do not pass bad work forward
- Keep your work area clean, organized, and free of safety hazards
- Participate in welder continuity — you must actively use each process you are certified for every 6 months
- Support the production team with grinding, burning, fitting, and general fabrication tasks as needed
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated welding experience in a structural steel fabrication environment
- Ability to read structural shop drawings and weld symbols (AWS A2.4)
- Proficiency with FCAW welding process
- Current AWS welder qualification or ability to qualify upon hire — Griffin tests in-house
- Solid understanding of fit-up, joint preparation, and weld quality standards
- Attention to detail and commitment to producing work that passes inspection the first time
- Ability to work safely around overhead cranes, heavy equipment, and hot material
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience welding to AWS D1.1 (Structural Welding Code) or AWS D1.5 (Bridge Welding Code)
- Experience on DOT, bridge, or highway infrastructure fabrication
- Ability to operate layout tools, burning table, press brake, or ironworker
- Forklift or telehandler certification
- Experience with SSPC surface prep and coating requirements
