Position Summary
The Design Engineer is responsible for supporting WCR manufacturing operations through tooling design, engineering innovation, and process improvement initiatives. This role focuses on designing and improving tooling for metal stamping and rubber compression molding operations while supporting manufacturing efficiency, quality standards, and operational reliability.
The Design Engineer partners closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Maintenance, and Sales teams to develop practical engineering solutions that improve tooling performance, reduce operational costs, and support continuous improvement efforts across the organization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Design tooling, dies, fixtures, and related components for metal stamping and rubber compression molding operations.
- Develop innovative tooling solutions to improve manufacturing efficiency, reduce downtime, and lower tooling and production costs.
- Create and maintain engineering drawings, models, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Utilize AutoCAD, SOLIDWORKS, and CAM software to support tooling design and machining activities.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on tooling optimization, manufacturing efficiency, and operational performance.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing and Maintenance teams to troubleshoot tooling and production-related issues.
- Support prototype development, testing, implementation, and validation activities.
- Assist with machining process improvements and support machine shop operations as needed.
- Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action activities related to tooling and manufacturing concerns.
- Ensure engineering designs and manufacturing processes align with applicable safety, quality, and operational standards.
- Work closely with Sales and Operations teams to support customer requirements and engineering-related initiatives.
- Maintain accurate engineering documentation and revision control records.
- Travel between WCR Wilmington and Fairborn facilities as business needs require.
- Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or related engineering discipline required.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and SOLIDWORKS.
- Experience with CAM software, including SmartCAM, CAMWorks, or equivalent systems.
- Working knowledge of G-Code programming.
- Experience utilizing Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM).
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience preferred.
- Experience working with Heat Exchanger and/or Pressure Vessel ASME Codes preferred.
- Machining and machine shop experience preferred.
- Previous manufacturing engineering experience preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, and lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) regularly.
- Ability to perform field inspections and assessments, which may involve walking, climbing, and lifting.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
Work Environment:
- Office environment with regular visits to manufacturing/production areas.
- Exposure to varying environmental conditions typical of industrial settings.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection.
Pay: $68,000.00 - $86,000.00 per year
