Job Title: Mental Health Coordinator
Reports To: Superintendent or Designee
Contract Length: 202 Days (or as assigned by the Board)
Salary: Based on the approved salary schedule
FLSA Status: Exempt
Grant funded. This position is based on receiving funds yearly.
To coordinate and oversee the delivery of student mental health services across Escambia County Schools in order to support student well-being, improve attendance, reduce discipline incidents, increase promotion and graduation rates, and ensure compliance with state laws and regulations regarding school-based mental health services.
This position is established in accordance with Alabama Administrative Code Rule 290-4-5-.08 – Mental Health Service Coordinator Program and Act 2022-422.
Mental Health Coordinator
The Mental Health Coordinator shall meet at least one of the following requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Social Work; OR
Meet Alabama State Department of Education qualifications for School Counselor; OR
Meet Alabama State Department of Education qualifications for School Nurse; OR
Hold licensure in a mental health profession (LPC, LMFT, LCSW, or related field); OR
Other qualifications approved by the Alabama Department of Mental Health and ALSDE.
Additional requirements:
Must obtain a School-Based Mental Health Certificate within one year of employment.
Valid Alabama certificate, license, or credential in professional field
Experience working with children, adolescents, or school systems preferred
Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills
Ability to analyze student data and develop intervention plans
Coordinate mental health services across all schools in the district.
Serve as liaison between schools, families, mental health agencies, and community partners.
Ensure compliance with state and federal laws related to student mental health services.
Assist the district in completing the annual mental health needs assessment and resource map.
Use data to identify students at risk of academic failure, behavior problems, absenteeism, or dropout.
Analyze indicators including:
Retention or overage for grade
Low assessment scores
Attendance or truancy concerns
Discipline referrals or suspensions
Special education status
Family risk factors
Work with school teams to develop intervention plans.
Assist schools in developing Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).
Support implementation of academic, behavioral, and social-emotional interventions.
Provide training to staff on supporting students at risk.
Participate in professional development related to mental health and student support.
Assist schools in providing prevention and intervention programs.
Support small-group, individual, and school-wide mental health initiatives.
Help develop personal education and career plans for students.
Promote programs addressing:
Work with elementary, middle, and high schools to support student transitions.
Participate in vertical team meetings.
Assist with programs to improve promotion and graduation rates.
Support school leadership teams, problem-solving teams, and student support teams.
Connect families with community mental health services.
Develop partnerships with:
Provide support to families of at-risk students.
Track student progress and program effectiveness.
Maintain required documentation and reports.
Submit reports to the district, ALSDE, and Alabama Department of Mental Health as required.
Monitor compliance with parent opt-in requirements for mental health services.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
Assist with district initiatives related to student wellness, attendance, discipline, and graduation.
Support crisis response and student safety efforts when needed.
Salary and work year established by the Escambia County Board of Education.
Employment subject to Board policy, state law, and ALSDE regulations.
Performance will be evaluated annually by the Superintendent or designee in accordance with Board policy.
