Shop Operations Manager
Position Type: Full-Time
Compensation: $80,000–$100,000 annually plus performance bonus and benefits.
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Shop Operations Manager to lead all aspects of our production facility. This position is responsible for overseeing daily shop operations, supervising production staff, managing workflow, ensuring quality standards, maintaining inventory, and creating a safe, organized, and efficient work environment.
The ideal candidate has 5+ years of experience in manufacturing, fabrication, print production, construction operations, or a similar production environment, along with proven leadership experience. This individual is a strong communicator, problem solver, and team builder who thrives in a fast-paced environment while driving operational excellence and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Production
- Oversee all daily shop operations to ensure productivity, efficiency, and quality standards are consistently achieved.
- Plan, prioritize, and coordinate production schedules to meet customer deadlines and project timelines.
- Monitor workflow and allocate labor effectively to maximize productivity.
- Maintain high standards for quality control on all finished products.
- Coordinate with project managers, sales staff, designers, and field installation teams to ensure smooth project execution.
- Identify operational bottlenecks and implement practical solutions to improve efficiency.
Leadership & Team Development
- Supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate shop employees, including technicians, operators, installers, and support staff.
- Foster a positive, team-oriented culture focused on accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, scheduling, and employee development.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching to improve individual and team performance.
Inventory & Equipment Management
- Manage inventory of raw materials, supplies, tools, and equipment.
- Coordinate purchasing and maintain relationships with vendors and suppliers.
- Monitor equipment performance and schedule preventative maintenance and repairs.
- Ensure equipment is properly maintained and operating safely.
Safety & Compliance
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional shop environment.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company policies, and workplace safety standards.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and promote safe work practices throughout the facility.
Business Operations
- Track production metrics, labor efficiency, operational costs, and job progress.
- Support budgeting, staffing, and long-term operational planning.
- Recommend and implement process improvements to reduce waste, improve quality, and increase profitability.
- Assist leadership in achieving production, financial, and customer satisfaction goals.
Customer Service
- Communicate with customers regarding production schedules, project status, and delivery expectations when necessary.
- Help resolve production challenges while maintaining excellent customer service.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience in shop operations, manufacturing, fabrication, construction, printing, signage, or a related production environment.
- Minimum 2–3 years of supervisory or management experience.
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing production teams.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Experience managing production schedules and multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and production or inventory management software.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
- Valid driver's license preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in sign manufacturing, wide-format printing, fabrication, graphics production, or custom manufacturing.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing, process improvement, or Six Sigma principles.
- Experience with inventory management and purchasing systems.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification.
- Forklift certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequently lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Occasionally operate shop machinery and material handling equipment.
- Comfortable working in a production, warehouse, or fabrication environment.
