Position Summary
The Site Labor Crew keeps Brittenum Residential's & Brittenum Construction communities clean, safe and properly drained. This is hands-on hourly field work performed across all active projects. Daily work includes jobsite cleanup and debris removal, street sweeping, stacking and staging material for return, attic cleanout, erosion and sediment control, small-equipment grading and excavation, fueling and caring for company and rental equipment, cleaning out detention and drainage areas, and some light site maintenance.
Essential Job Responsibilities
1. Daily Jobsite Cleanup & Appearance
- Perform daily jobsite cleanup on assigned lots: pick up, contain, and remove construction debris and trash.
- Sweep streets, curbs, and gutters fronting active lots; clean up mud and dirt tracked onto public streets.
- Weed eat, trim, and blow lots, driveways, sidewalks, and streets as needed.
- Keep walking paths, driveways, and access ways clear and safe for trades, inspectors, and client traffic.
- Maintain the appearance of all active jobsites.
2. Material Handling & Returns
- Stack and organize material on jobsites as directed so trades can work efficiently and material is not damaged, buried, or borrowed between houses.
- Sort, stack, and stage excess and unused material for supplier return so the company receives proper credit.
- Report damaged, missing, or short-delivered material rather than leaving it on the lot.
- Load, unload, and move material and equipment between lots and communities.
- Prevent material waste and jobsite loss; secure attractive-to-theft material as directed.
3. Equipment Operation
- Operate the skid steer for rough grading, backfill, material moving, spoil removal, and site cleanup.
- Operate the mini excavator for water meter height adjustments and other small excavation, repair, and drainage work.
- Drive the company truck with the diesel tank as assigned.
- Haul and trailer equipment between lots and communities, loading and securing loads properly.
- Operate hand and power equipment safely, including weed eaters, blowers, plate compactors, pumps, and saws.
- Do not operate any piece of equipment until trained and cleared by the Crew Leader.
- Stay within the limits of assigned equipment and licensing; stop and escalate work that requires a licensed trade, a larger machine, or an outside contractor.
4. Fuel & Equipment Care
- Fill diesel tanks on company and rental equipment on site and keep fuel supply ahead of demand.
- Perform daily walk-around checks on assigned equipment; keep fluids, tires, and attachments serviceable and report damage, leaks, or needed repair immediately.
- Keep equipment clean, fueled, secured, and properly stored at the end of each shift.
5. Erosion, Sediment & Drainage Work
- Install, repair, and maintain silt fence, inlet protection, construction entrances, wattles, and other erosion and sediment control measures per the approved site plan.
- Fill and place sand and sediment bags for inlet and drainage protection.
- Clean out and restore detention areas, ponds, drainage swales, and channels to design condition.
- Inspect erosion control after rain events and correct deficiencies promptly; report any condition the crew cannot correct.
- Keep drainage paths open to maintain positive drainage.
- Support the company's stormwater compliance requirements and correct items identified during regulatory or municipal inspections. (Program ownership and any required certification remain as assigned by the company.)
6. Yard Watering & Final Grade Support
- Set, move, and monitor sprinklers to water new sod and seed until turf is established and accepted.
- Monitor watering coverage and report irrigation problems that put new turf at risk.
- Support final grade cleanup, dirt work touch-up, and yard preparation ahead of sod and landscape installation.
7. Safety & Jobsite Security
- Wear required personal protective equipment at all times.
- Report jobsite hazards, near misses, and injuries immediately; never leave a known hazard for the next person.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures.
8. Special Assignments
- Complete additional assigned tasks as directed by the Crew Leader, Field Manager, or Area Construction Manager, and communicate clearly when a special assignment will displace scheduled work.
9. Additional Responsibilities — Crew Leader Only
- Set and communicate the daily work plan: assign crew members to lots and tasks, sequence the route across active communities, and adjust as field priorities change.
- Serve as the single intake point for labor requests from Field Managers (via Area Construction Manager direction); confirm scope and timing rather than working from informal or conflicting instructions.
- Direct and work alongside the crew — this is a working leader position, not a supervisory-only role.
- Verify each assigned task is 100% complete to Brittenum standards before reporting it finished.
- Train new crew members on task standards, equipment operation, and safety expectations; verify competence before allowing independent equipment operation.
- Conduct brief daily safety talks with the crew, enforce PPE, and correct unsafe conditions and behaviors on the spot.
- Monitor rental equipment on the ground: confirm rentals are still needed, coordinate timely pickup of idle rentals, and report idle rental days.
- Track fuel usage by equipment and community and report it as directed.
- Review and confirm crew time records for accuracy before submittal.
- Provide the Area Construction Manager with regular updates on crew status, workload, backlog, and any request the crew cannot absorb.
- Address performance and attendance issues promptly and escalate when correction is needed.
Experience
- Crew Leader: residential and light commercial construction, sitework, landscape, or grounds experience required, with demonstrated experience leading or directing a small crew.
- Skid steer and mini excavator experience preferred at laborer level and required at Crew Leader level — grading, backfill, and small excavation.
- Experience installing and maintaining erosion and sediment control preferred.
- Experience hauling and trailering equipment safely.
Skills & Competencies
- Dependable and consistently on time — the crew's day depends on a full crew.
- Strong work ethic with the stamina for sustained outdoor physical labor.
- Safety-minded; follows direction and asks before operating unfamiliar equipment.
- Attention to detail — finishes the task completely rather than partially.
- Basic mechanical aptitude for fueling, servicing, and troubleshooting small equipment.
- Works well with a crew and communicates problems early.
- Crew Leader: able to run a multi-project route and a full day's work without direct supervision, give clear direction, and hold people accountable respectfully and consistently.
- Crew Leader: organized enough to track hours, fuel, rentals, and completed work accurately.
- Bilingual English/Spanish is required.
