Experienced Family Law Paralegal
Location: White Plains & Bronx (Riverdale)
Position: Full-Time
Practice Area: Matrimonial & Family Law
We are a growing Westchester & Bronx law firm seeking an experienced Family Law Paralegal to join our team. This is not an entry-level position. The successful candidate will have meaningful, hands-on experience working in a New York matrimonial and/or family law practice (or similar litigation field) and will be comfortable managing substantial responsibility in active matters.
The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, responsive, and capable of independently moving assignments forward while working closely with attorneys, clients, and other members of the legal team. We are looking for someone who understands that family-law clients are often dealing with highly personal and stressful circumstances and who can combine efficiency and professionalism with sound judgment and appropriate client sensitivity.
Responsibilities
The Family Law Paralegal will work closely with the firm's attorneys and will be responsible for substantive case support throughout the lifecycle of matrimonial and family-law matters. Responsibilities will include:
- Assist attorneys with divorce, custody, parenting time, child support, spousal maintenance, enforcement, modification, and related matrimonial and family-law proceedings.
- Draft and prepare correspondence, pleadings, affidavits, motions, discovery demands and responses, subpoenas, notices, stipulations, and other litigation documents for attorney review.
- Assist with preparation of Statements of Net Worth, including gathering and organizing financial information and supporting documentation.
- Review and organize bank statements, tax returns, credit-card statements, brokerage and retirement-account records, business records, real-estate documents, and other financial materials.
- Assist attorneys with financial discovery and analysis, including identifying missing documents, organizing financial productions, and preparing summaries and schedules.
- Coordinate and track discovery requests, responses, authorizations, subpoenas, deficiencies, and outstanding documentation.
- Maintain organized electronic case files and ensure that pleadings, correspondence, discovery, financial records, and other documents are properly saved and categorized.
- Maintain case calendars and track court appearances, filing deadlines, discovery deadlines, motion schedules, conferences, depositions, and other critical dates.
- Assist attorneys in preparing for court conferences, hearings, depositions, mediations, settlement negotiations, and trials.
- Assemble exhibits, hearing and trial binders, chronologies, document indexes, financial summaries, and other case-preparation materials.
- Communicate professionally with clients regarding document requests, scheduling, case administration, and other appropriate non-legal matters.
- Communicate with opposing counsel, court personnel, experts, process servers, and other third parties as directed by attorneys.
- Assist with electronic filing through NYSCEF and other applicable court filing systems.
- Assist with service (via server) and filing of pleadings and other documents and confirm that required filings and service have been completed.
- Monitor matters proactively and alert attorneys to approaching deadlines, outstanding discovery, missing documents, or other issues requiring attention.
- Accurately record time and comply with the firm's billing and case-management procedures.
- Work collaboratively with attorneys, other paralegals, legal assistants, intake personnel, and administrative staff.
- Perform other substantive paralegal and case-management responsibilities as needed.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must have:
- Prior experience working as a paralegal in a matrimonial and/or family-law practice, or similar litigation field.
- Experience preparing and organizing litigation documents, discovery materials, and financial records.
- Experience managing multiple active matters, deadlines, and competing priorities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong proofreading skills and exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate professionally and appropriately with clients who may be experiencing emotionally difficult or contentious family situations.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, PDF/document-management tools, and related office technology.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a deadline-driven law-firm environment.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to take ownership of assignments from beginning through completion.
Candidates without prior matrimonial/family-law or similar litigation experience will not be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
The following are strongly preferred:
- 3+ years of New York matrimonial/family-law paralegal experience.
- Experience with contested divorces involving significant financial discovery.
- Strong familiarity with New York matrimonial and family-law procedures and terminology.
- Experience preparing Statements of Net Worth and organizing complex marital financial records.
- Experience assisting with custody and support matters in both Supreme Court and Family Court.
- Experience with NYSCEF and New York court filing procedures.
- Experience preparing attorneys for hearings, depositions, settlement conferences, and trials.
- Experience using Clio or another legal practice-management platform.
What We Are Looking For
This position is particularly well suited for a paralegal who enjoys having meaningful responsibility for cases rather than simply waiting for individual assignments.
We value someone who can look at a matter, understand what needs to happen next, and help make sure it happens. The successful candidate will be comfortable following up with clients for documents, identifying gaps in discovery, maintaining accurate case files and calendars, anticipating deadlines, and helping attorneys remain prepared and organized.
Because matrimonial and family law frequently involves sensitive financial and personal information, discretion, judgment, confidentiality, and professionalism are essential.
Schedule & Work Environment
This is a full-time position based in our White Plains & Riverdale offices. The firm offers a collaborative work environment with the opportunity for limited work-from-home flexibility after the successful candidate has become acclimated to the firm's systems, attorneys, clients, and workflow.
The position requires someone who can work effectively in a busy practice where priorities sometimes change quickly due to court appearances, client emergencies, negotiations, and litigation deadlines.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary: $75,000–$125,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Exceptional candidates with substantial New York matrimonial experience, strong financial-analysis skills, and the ability to independently manage sophisticated case responsibilities may be considered at the upper end of the range.
Benefits include:
- Paid vacation
- Paid sick leave
- 401(k)
- Hybrid/work-from-home flexibility, subject to the firm's needs and policies
