Travel Expectations
Approximately 75% of assignments are located within a two-hour drive of the MES home office and allow employees to return home the same day. Occasional overnight travel may be required for projects throughout the United States. Lodging and per diem are provided for qualifying overnight assignments.
Position Overview
Marsh Engineering Services, PLLC (MES) is seeking an experienced, dependable, and detail-oriented Land Survey Crew Chief to lead field operations for a variety of surveying and construction-related projects.
The ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience serving as a Survey Crew Chief and demonstrated proficiency in construction staking, boundary retracement, topographic mapping, as-built surveys, and modern survey equipment and workflows.
This position requires strong technical judgment, consistent field quality control, effective leadership, and professional communication with clients, contractors, project managers, and other members of the MES team.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead daily survey field operations and supervise survey assistants while meeting project schedule, safety, accuracy, and quality expectations.
- Perform construction staking and layout for site development, grading, utilities, roadways, structures, and other civil construction improvements.
- Conduct boundary retracement fieldwork, including monument recovery, evaluation and documentation of boundary evidence, reference ties, and preparation of thorough field records.
- Perform conventional and GNSS-based topographic surveys and support UAS data collection when required by the project scope.
- Complete as-built surveys to verify installed improvements, document construction progress, and confirm compliance with project plans and specifications.
- Establish, verify, and maintain horizontal and vertical control using appropriate checks, closures, redundancies, and field QA/QC procedures.
- Review and interpret construction plans, plats, profiles, cut sheets, control reports, and other project documents.
- Identify and promptly communicate discrepancies, conflicts, unsafe conditions, access limitations, or other issues that may affect field operations or project delivery.
- Maintain complete and accurate field documentation, including electronic field notes, sketches, photographs, daily reports, and project files.
- Complete required data transfers and daily uploads in accordance with MES procedures.
- Maintain assigned survey equipment and vehicles and ensure they remain organized, secure, operational, and ready for use.
- Follow company safety procedures and applicable jobsite requirements.
- Support the training and professional development of survey assistants and junior field personnel.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of three years of experience working as a Survey Crew Chief.
- Demonstrated field experience in:
- Construction staking and layout
- Boundary retracement
- Topographic mapping
- As-built surveying
- Proficiency with modern survey equipment and field workflows, including:
- Robotic total stations
- GNSS/RTK GPS systems
- Survey data collectors
- Experience with equipment from any major survey manufacturer is acceptable.
- Ability to perform routine equipment troubleshooting, verify field setups, and consistently apply appropriate QA/QC procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret civil, site development, roadway, utility, and construction plans.
- Ability to translate project scopes and design information into accurate and efficient field execution.
- Strong organizational, leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate professionally with clients, contractors, inspectors, project managers, and field personnel.
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, terrain, and active construction environments.
- Ability to safely perform the physical requirements associated with land surveying fieldwork.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Trimble GNSS/RTK systems, robotic total stations, Trimble Access, and related field workflows. MES operates primarily in a Trimble-based environment, and Trimble experience is strongly preferred.
- Experience with DOT, roadway, utility, site development, or heavy civil construction projects.
- Experience supporting UAS-based topographic and mapping operations.
- OSHA 10, OSHA 30, or equivalent safety training.
- Experience training, mentoring, and developing survey assistants or junior crew members.
