Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Travel Registered Nurse (RN) specializing in Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and Stepdown care to join our dynamic healthcare team. This role involves providing high-quality patient care across day and night shifts, with a standard 36-hour workweek. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in critical care settings, including hospital medicine, telemetry, and emergency medicine, ensuring comprehensive support for patients with complex medical needs. Key responsibilities include performing detailed patient assessments, administering medications and treatments with aseptic technique, managing ventilators and IV infusions, and coordinating care plans aligned with hospital standards. You will utilize advanced electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic and Cerner to document medical records accurately. Additionally, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless discharge planning, infection control adherence, and compliance with HIPAA regulations. Your proficiency in cardiac catheterization, trauma medicine, ICU procedures, and infectious disease care will be instrumental in supporting our patients' recovery journeys.
Duties
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments including vital signs, physical examinations, and physiological evaluations to determine immediate needs.
- Administer medications via various routes including injections, IV infusions, and catheter care while adhering strictly to aseptic techniques.
- Manage complex medical devices such as ventilators, dialysis machines, and cardiac monitors; monitor patient responses continuously.
- Document all patient interactions accurately within EMR/EHR systems like Athenahealth or eClinicalWorks; ensure compliance with HIPAA standards.
- Collaborate with physicians and specialists in areas such as cardiology, nephrology, ophthalmology (botulinum toxin treatments), and behavioral health to develop individualized care plans.
- Perform diagnostic evaluations including laboratory specimen collection/processing and imaging procedures like sonography or mammography when required.
- Support discharge planning by coordinating post-acute care services including home & community care; educate patients on medication management and health coaching.
- Respond effectively to acute emergencies such as trauma incidents or infectious disease outbreaks; utilize critical & intensive care protocols.
- Maintain proficiency in ICD coding (ICD-9/ICD-10), CPT coding for procedures, and documentation standards aligned with NCQA standards.
- Ensure infection control practices are rigorously followed; participate in quality improvement initiatives related to patient safety.
Experience
Candidates should possess a minimum of two years of recent inpatient nursing experience within hospital environments such as Level I or Level II trauma centers or teaching hospitals. Prior exposure to critical care units—including ICU or PICU—is essential. Experience working across diverse clinical settings such as emergency rooms, urgent care clinics, outpatient surgery centers, or long-term care facilities is highly desirable. Familiarity with EMR/EHR systems like Epic or Cerner is required; additional experience with Athenahealth or eClinicalWorks is advantageous.
Applicants must demonstrate strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, infection control protocols, and advanced patient assessment techniques. Proven ability to handle complex cases involving acute pain management, trauma medicine, neonatal resuscitation procedures, or hospice & palliative medicine will set candidates apart. Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is mandatory; additional certifications such as ACLS or PALS are preferred.
