Job description: Health Sciences Teacher
Starting Pay: $45 an hour
Position Overview
Youth Guidance of Indian River County is seeking a Health Sciences Instructor to lead hands-on, exploratory learning in one of our three core program pathways. This is where the health sciences pathway begins: through activities that explore the human body, exercise, wellness, and the many careers in health and medicine, students build the curiosity, communication, and foundational skills that grow into clinical and credential-earning opportunities as they get older. You will spark early interest in how the body works and how people care for one another, and set students on a pathway that can carry them toward real healthcare careers and industry credentials.
Position Details:
- Job Type: Part-Time
- Schedule: Monday–Friday
- Reports To: Program Director
- FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Hourly
- Hours (school year): 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. (15 hours a week)
- Hours (summer): 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (40 hours a week)
- Benefits: Paid holidays, professional development
About the Role:
As Health Sciences Instructor, you own the Foundation and Exploration stages of our learning continuum for this track. Your classroom is part lab and part discussion circle: students investigate how the body works, practice age-appropriate health and wellness skills, and meet the wide world of health careers. The goal is twofold — make learning tangible and engaging now, and lay the groundwork that leads into the clinical, credential-earning Launch stage of the pathway for older students.
This position works with students ages 6–18. You'll lead the hands-on health sciences activities for elementary and middle school students, rotating to a different grade band every six months (K–2, 3–5, and 6–8). You'll also provide tutoring and academic enrichment for students of all ages, including high school.
What You’ll Do
Exploratory & Project-Based Learning
- Design and lead hands-on health sciences activities — exploring body systems, wellness, nutrition, hygiene, first aid concepts, and the science of how the body works.
- Introduce age-appropriate tools and skills, such as taking a pulse, measuring, and safe, hands-on health and lab activities.
- Adapt activities across age groups and ability level so that every student is both challenged and supported.
- Guide students through the full arc of an activity — exploring a question, investigating, practicing, and reflecting on what they learned.
After-School Tutoring
- Provide homework help and academic support during the after-school tutoring block.
- Work one-on-one and in small groups to help students with assignments, reading and math.
- Create a focused, positive and encouraging study environment
- Track tutoring participation and student progress as needed for program and grant reporting.
Pathway Connection
- Introduce students to health and medical careers and the skills, communication, and professionalism that lead into the clinical, credential-earning stage of the pathway as they grow older.
- Reinforce foundational science, communication, and problem-solving through real, tangible activities.
- Coordinate with program leadership and community healthcare partners to keep activities aligned with the next steps in the pathway.
Classroom & Student Support
- Maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming learning environment.
- Manage a group of students with positive, consistent classroom-management practices.
- Track attendance and student progress as needed for program and grant reporting.
What We’re Looking For:
- Experience working with youth in an educational or afterschool setting.
- Comfort leading hands-on, exploratory activities and facilitating discussion about health, wellness, and careers.
- Comfort helping students with homework and building their confidence in core subjects like reading and math.
- Strong classroom-management skills and the patience to work with a wide range of learners.
- A genuine interest in health, science, and human services — you don't need to be a clinician, but you should love how the body works and how people care for one another.
- Commitment to youth development and to Youth Guidance's mission.
Required
- Bachelor’s degree and active teacher certification
- Prior experience working with youth.
- Ability to pass a Level 2 background screening (standard for youth-serving roles).
- Able to comfortably drive a 15-passenger van with training provided
Preferred
- Experience teaching health science, human services, or a related field.
- Experience with project-based, exploratory, or hands-on curriculum.
- Experience tutoring or providing academic support to youth.
- Background in healthcare, nursing, human services or a related discipline.
Physical Requirements
- Able to stand, move around a lab and classroom, and actively supervise students for extended periods.
- Able to lift and carry materials and supplies (up to approximately 25–30 lbs).
Why Join Youth Guidance
You will be the spark at the very start of a young person's journey -- the person who first shows them how the body works, what it means to care for someone, and that a career in health could be theirs -- while also helping them stay on track in school today. At Youth Guidance, that first exploration is not a one-off, it is the front door to a pathway that leads toward clinical skills and real industry credentials. Since 1973, we have helped Indian River County youth build trust, confidence, and pathways to career success. This role is where that pathway begins.
