Residential Construction Laborer – Job Description
A residential construction carpenter builds and repairs homes, reading blueprints to install framing, walls, floors, windows, and doors. This role requires strong physical abilities, including lifting heavy materials and potentially working at heights, along with good hand-eye coordination, math skills, and attention to detail. Key duties include material preparation, site cleanup, and ensuring safety compliance on the job.
Carpenters do a variety of different jobs, but some of their duties might include:
- Installing wooden structures such as roofing frames, rafters, partitions, joists and stud work
- Designing and installing cabinets, shelving, fitted furniture, drywall and insulation
- Key finish work around installing trim, stairwells, paint and other end-of-project completion tasks
- Implementing the build-out of designs for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, decks and other additions and re-models to homes
- Assisting specialized sub-contractors in the staging and completion of projects
- Adding fixtures and fittings such as door handles, locks, hinges and closures
- Selecting lumber by size and strength to suit each job, sourcing wood to suit the customer’s budget and style
- Calculating the number of fasteners required for each job
- Liaising with clients, suppliers and other construction professionals
- Reading blueprints and designs to work to specifications prepared by other construction professionals, architects and building code recommendations
Key responsibilities
Constructing frameworks for walls, floors, and roofs using blueprints and building plans.
Installing structures and fixtures like windows, doors, stairs, and molding.
Performing finish work, which may include tasks like installing flooring, paneling, and trim.
Measuring, cutting, and shaping wood, plastic, and other materials as needed.
Arriving on time, loading and unloading materials and equipment, and ensuring the job site is clean and safe at the end of the day.
Working with other team members to ensure the project is completed accurately and efficiently.
Following all OSHA regulations and ensuring helpers also follow safety guidelines.
Qualifications
- Prior experience or training in construction or related manual labor roles is required
- Ability to read construction plans and technical drawings with confidence.
- Knowledge of mechanical systems and basic tool operation.
- Familiarity with construction workplace safety regulations and OSHA safety standards.
- Physical strength and stamina for manual handling, heavy lifting, climbing, and working at heights.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions accurately while working independently or as part of a team.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment by adhering to all safety protocols, including respiratory protection when necessary.
