Controller — Construction Accounting
Finishing Edge
Everett, Washington | Full-time | Onsite
Salary Range: $120,000–$140,000, depending on experience
About Finishing Edge
Founded in 1995, Finishing Edge is an established specialty concrete contractor serving Washington and Alaska. We've built our reputation over three decades through quality workmanship, experienced employees, and long-term relationships with customers, employees, and business partners.
The Opportunity
The Controller will lead the accounting and financial reporting function for our Washington and Alaska operations, reporting directly to ownership. This person will supervise payroll, accounts payable, and billing, and will lead a three-person accounting team.
The successful candidate will bring structure, consistency, and accountability to the accounting department. They will establish a dependable reporting cycle, strengthen accounting processes, and become a trusted financial partner to ownership and operational management — with direct visibility into how the business is run and a real say in shaping how it's reported on.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee construction job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, and project financial analysis.
- Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close and financial reporting process.
- Supervise payroll, accounts payable, billing, and cash-management activities.
- Develop and maintain effective accounting processes, controls, and reporting standards.
- Manage reporting and relationships with ownership, operational managers, banks, CPAs, bonding representatives, and insurance providers.
- Lead and develop the accounting team while promoting accountability and a positive working environment.
- Identify and implement opportunities to modernize and streamline accounting processes.
- Maintain well-documented procedures and ensure cross-training for vacation coverage.
The Person We Are Looking For
The right person is even-keeled, dependable, and professionally polished — a self-starter who takes ownership of deadlines and follows through without requiring extensive oversight.
They are comfortable holding themselves and others accountable while maintaining respectful, productive working relationships. Strong emotional intelligence, sound judgment, and the ability to address difficult issues constructively are essential. We're looking for a Controller who is genuinely interested in our construction work, wants to be an integral leader in the company, and can think like a business owner when setting priorities.
Qualifications
- Progressive construction accounting experience, including experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or comparable senior accounting professional.
- Construction accounting and job-cost experience, including preparing WIP schedules.
- Strong experience producing in-house payroll, union payroll, 941s, and W-2s, and managing HR, AP, billing, AR, and GL accounting functions.
- Experience supervising accounting employees.
- Strong Excel and analytical skills.
Experience with construction accounting software (we use Foundation), public works, certified payroll, bonding, or multi-company accounting is preferred. A bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, and a CPA or CCIFP designation, is also preferred.
Why Join Finishing Edge?
- A stable, established company operating continuously since 1995.
- A long-term career opportunity with direct access to ownership and operations.
- The chance to lead and build out an important accounting function — with real influence over how it's structured going forward.
- A company culture that values quality, loyalty, fairness, and long-term relationships.
Compensation and Benefits
The anticipated salary range is $120,000–$140,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications. Benefits include:
- Medical, dental, and vision coverage (Regence)
- Medical Deductible Reimbursement Program
- 401(k) with company match
