SUMMARY:
Plays an active role in supporting infrastructure projects by ensuring that construction activities align with engineering standards, specifications, and regulatory requirements. This internship offers the opportunity to contribute to the Berrien County Road Department engineering division through both design and construction phases. The intern will work alongside an experienced engineering team on tasks such as developing and reviewing preliminary plans, conducting site inspections, and assisting in the preparation of engineering documents. This position provides valuable hands-on experience in civil engineering design, road construction, asset management, and BCRD operations in the public sector. Internship program not to exceed 12 weeks.
DUTIES:
- Surveying: Assists in preliminary and construction surveying, using equipment such as Total Station and GPS.
- Design: Creates or modifies engineering plan sets in CAD. Based on experience level, may create or modify 3D models.
- Road/Traffic Studies: Intern will assist engineering team with the collection of various data including roadway traffic counts, speed studies, and PASER collection.
- Inspection: Participates in field inspection of construction projects. Supports field oversight throughout the construction phase including sampling of materials, documentation of contractor performance, and verification of traffic control within the work zone.
- Teamwork: Maintains effective and professional communication with the engineering team, Road Department personnel, third-party contractors, and the public. As part of the Road Department team, interns will support the department mission to maintain a county road system that is safe and convenient for public travel.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Actively pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related construction field.
- AutoCAD experience is required.
- Additional related course work or applied work in road transportation engineering or construction is desired.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
- Safety toed boots and long pants required for all field work.
- Must have the ability to learn work zone safety requirements and MDOT specifications and standards.
