Duties
Do assigned maintenance projects in the areas of mechanical maintenance.
Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs to building structures, grounds, equipment and institutional systems.
Knowledgeable in multiple maintenance disciplines, general construction, new construction, planning, designing, laying out, plumbing, steam, refrigeration, HVAC, building temp control systems, welding and fabrication.
Must have and can actively demonstrate proficiencies in the areas of: electrical, plumbing, carpentry and HVAC repair/maintenance work.
Will make repairs/installations as assigned in related work orders received.
Knowledge of practices, methods and the usage of tools and equipment utilized in building and mechanical trades work.
Knowledge of the tools, materials, practices and have the ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches and other forms/guidelines pertaining to building and mechanical trades work.
Ability to plan and lay out work, determine cost estimates and maintain records associated with building and mechanical trades work at Correctional Institutions. Ability to lift, push, pull objects of varying weights, sizes and shapes associated with trades work.
Must demonstrate proficiency in HVAC, plumbing, minor electrical repair and system diagnosis.
Make repairs and installations as needed or assigned by the supervisor to meet facilities needs
Knowledge of practices, methods, tools, equipment, and materials. to diagnose repair or replace
Have the ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches and other guidelines pertaining to building and mechanical trades work.
Ability to plan and lay out work, determine cost estimates and maintain records associated with building and mechanical trades work at Correctional Institutions.

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

Four years of full-time work experience in one or more of the recognized building (e.g., carpentry, painting, plumbing/pipefitting, electrical and masonry) and mechanical/repair (e.g., air conditioning/ heating, auto mechanics, upholstery and welding) trades.

A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in a recognized building and mechanical trade for each year of the required experience.

Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Furniture Upholsterer, Mason, Maintenance Repairer, Carpenter 1 or 2, Painter 1 or 2, Plumber 1 or 2, or Welder.

Within a period of time, as determined by the appointing authority, persons in this class may be required to obtain a license to perform electrical work in accordance with Chapter 103, Iowa Code
Designated positions in this job class require applicants to obtain the required commercial driver's license and endorsements within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority at the time of hire.
