The Sterile Processing Technician I is accountable for all aspects of sterile processing including but not limited to decontaminating, preparing, packaging, sterilizing, auditing, and the sterile storage and distribution of sterile medical devices to all applicable FHC departments and clinics.
Responsibilities of these positions include:
- Demonstrates knowledge and documented competency in all principles and aspects of decontamination; including referencing/reading manufacturers' IFU, sorting, disassembly/reassembly, manual and mechanical cleaning methods, microbicidal processes, standard transmission-based precautions and appropriate use of PPE, necessary equipment operations, and safety measures.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and documented competencies in all principles and aspects of "clean" handling and sterilization; including infectious disease transmission and prevention thereof, appropriate use of PPE and adherence to dress code, routine inspection, testing, proper preparation, proper selection of packaging and sterilizing procedures, necessary equipment operations, and safety measures.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and documented competency in the operation of the specific high-level disinfection and sterilization systems used within FHC and the accurate, required documentation of those processes.
- Accurately monitors and documents the high-level disinfection and sterilization processes according to policy, guidelines, and industry standards to ensure quality control and patient safety at all times.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and documented competence in worker safety as it relates to medical device processing, high-level disinfection, and sterilization to assure quality control along with team and patient safety at all times.
- Facilitates access to surgical supplies and sterile instrumentation for all applicable FHC departments and clinics.
- Maintains and contributes to the Sterile Processing department's required environment of cleanliness and monitoring of temperatures, humidities, and airflow.
- Maintains proficiency in required computer applications' access and use.
Requirements of these positions include:
- High School Diploma or GED; Sterile Processing Technician course diploma/certificate or equivalent preferred
- 1 or more years of health/dental care experience preferred
- Attention to detail; ability to consistently adhere to defined processes and manufacturers' instructions for use; ability to work efficiently with frequent interruptions while supporting the supply needs of the hospital with primary focus on the OR; ability to effectively communicate with staff and department stakeholders.
- Working knowledge, shadowing, or prolonged observation of an OR or SPD department preferred
- BLS Certification, within 3 months of hire required
- Sterile Processing Technician certification through the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc. (CBSPD) or the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) within two years of employment preferred
