POSITION OVERVIEW:
Working closely with the Director, the Head Coach oversees program operations, coaching staff, athlete development, parent communication and fleet management while ensuring a safe, inclusive, and high-performance environment that supports KHYF's mission. Sailing programs include Learn-to-Sail classes, Race Teams and summer camp using Opti’s, FJs and Martin 242’s.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Promote and enforce all KHYF and US Sailing safety standards with active supervision ensuring a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all participants
- Be a positive role model/mentor to youth participants while promoting sportsmanship, teamwork, skill development on and off the water
- Oversee daily program operations, which includes developing and writing program curriculums for existing and new classes, managing registrations, scheduling, record keeping, communications, and seasonal calendars.
- Prepare and deliver lesson plans/activities to youth sailors in a well-planned, fun and engaging manner; Track class attendance and turn rosters into supervisors regularly
- Coordinate regatta registrations, travel logistics, and communication with sailors, families, and coaches.
- Maintain regular communication with the Director, sailors, parents, coaches, volunteers, Board of Directors and KHYC flag officers/staff
- Establish clear expectations for sailors, coaches and families regarding the set-up, use and care of KHYF assets, KHYC facility and docks; Teach sailors water safety and proper care for boats and equipment
- Work with Director on the care, maintenance, organization, and safe operation of boats, trailers, equipment, and sailing facilities; help implement preventative maintenance procedures and immediately address any concerns/issues
- Participate in scheduled staff training throughout the year and manage other coaches/coaches-in-training
- Foster strong relationships with families, volunteers, yacht clubs, schools, and regional sailing organizations to strengthen KHYF's programs and visibility
- Collaborate on KHYF fundraising events, awards ceremonies, website content, newsletters, and social media updates related to racing programs and team accomplishments.
- Handle additional duties or attend other events as assigned
REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
- Proficiency with Google Workspace, registration systems (Clubspot preferred), and social media platforms
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for regular internal and external contact
- Detail-oriented and strong organizational skills for seasonal program planning, attendance, coordinating regattas, travel logistics, etc.
- Ability to effectively identify and resolve conflicts, manage multiple priorities and lead a team in a fast-paced environment
- Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and travel to regattas as required
- Positive, professional, and dependable leadership with a passion for youth development and excellence in sailing instruction
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS:
- Must have US Sailing Level 1 Certification or Higher
- Current CPR/First Aid Certification
- Safe Sport Certified
