Position Summary
The part-time Education Volunteers Lead creates a welcoming, engaging and impactful experience for volunteers and visitors to the Discovery Center by recruiting, training and supporting our education volunteer program. Through close collaboration with team members across the organization, the Lead will ensure that volunteers and the activities they facilitate create the spark that inspires our visitors to develop a love of science and learning.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
Recruitment and training
- Provide management and supervision of education volunteers training in collaboration with the Visitor Services Coordinator.
- Assist in the recruitment and selection of new volunteers.
- Assist in the development and facilitation of volunteer orientation and training.
- Maintain accurate records of current and past education volunteers, including their training history and contact details.
Program development
- Collaborate closely with the Education Team to design and implement volunteer activities and associated training, including new hands-on activities each quarter.
- Design and implement an evaluation process for all education volunteer activities.
- Organize and maintain all supplies and materials necessary for programming activities.
Team support
- Serve as the primary contact for education volunteers by staying in regular communication and providing face-to-face interaction and support during volunteer shifts.
- Develop, manage and communicate daily schedules for volunteers based on their training, interests and availability.
- Provide opportunities for continuing development of volunteers, particularly creating a sense of engagement and ownership.
- Stay connected to the wider community of volunteers in the area.
- Supports other functions as assigned, including occasional time supporting the visitor experience.
Minimum Qualifications
Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Possesses excellent customer service and communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Skilled at presenting both one-on-one, and to small and large groups
- Experienced in training and supporting adults
- Comfortable managing ambiguity and learning on the fly
- Able to prioritize and multi-task
- Strong skills using technology, including productivity software, email and shared file systems
- Works independently and as a member of a small team
- Enthusiastic about astronomy, Earth and space science and working with volunteers and the public
Education and experience
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Associates degree or higher preferred
- Valid driver’s license or access to transportation
- Must be able to pass a background check
- Experience working in an administrative role, customer service, hospitality or sales preferred
- Experience working or volunteering in an education or non-profit setting preferred
