Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Campus Operations Manager, the Custodian is responsible for performing a variety of routine custodial activities to maintain the cleanliness, sanitation, and security of buildings, classrooms, offices, and adjacent grounds at Irvine International Academy (IIA). This role ensures that the campus remains a safe, orderly, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. The Custodian also assists with minor maintenance tasks and supports special events or activities as needed.
Responsibilities
- Sweep, scrub, mop, wax, and polish floors; vacuum, extract, and shampoo rugs and carpets; remove gum and spot clean surfaces as needed.
- Clean classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, auditoriums, restrooms, lounges, hallways, and other facilities, including washing windows, walls, sinks, fountains, and furniture.
- Sanitize and disinfect restrooms, drinking fountains, and high-touch surfaces; refill dispensers with towels, soap, and other supplies.
- Empty waste receptacles, including recycling containers, and ensure proper disposal of trash.
- Clean and maintain adjacent grounds, including picking up paper and debris, sweeping sidewalks, and performing minor weeding or trimming tasks.
- Operate and maintain custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, buffer machines, scrubbers, and other tools safely and effectively.
- Replace light bulbs and tubes; clean boards, trays, erasers, tables, chairs, and other fixtures as assigned.
- Lock and unlock doors, gates, and windows; turn lights on and off; maintain security of assigned areas, including setting alarms.
- Report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards to appropriate personnel; notify supervisors of maintenance and repair needs.
- Assist in moving, arranging, and setting up furniture and equipment for special events, meetings, and classroom activities; clean up after events.
- Perform emergency clean-ups resulting from spills, vandalism, breakages, or illnesses.
- Participate in deep cleaning and restoration of campus facilities during vacation periods or as directed.
- Assist in preventing vandalism and reporting any incidents or damage.
- Perform minor repairs and maintenance tasks as needed, including unclogging drains or toilets.
- Maintain accurate records related to assigned activities and follow schedules for daily, weekly, and periodic cleaning tasks.
- Follow all safety procedures when handling cleaning agents, chemicals, and equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Knowledge of: Modern custodial methods, materials, and equipment is essential for maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the campus. Familiarity with proper cleaning and sanitation techniques for floors, carpets, furniture, and fixtures is required. Knowledge of safe storage and handling of custodial supplies, proper lifting techniques, and health 1 and safety regulations is critical. The custodian should also understand the procedures for securing buildings and recognizing hazards that may impact school operations.
- Ability to: Perform custodial duties efficiently, ensuring that buildings and adjacent grounds are clean, safe, and secure. The role requires the ability to operate a variety of custodial equipment, follow schedules and oral or written instructions, and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly. Strong physical stamina is needed to lift, carry, push, or pull heavy objects and to perform tasks that involve bending, kneeling, or reaching. The Custodian must work independently or as part of a team, communicate effectively, and maintain cooperative relationships with staff, students, and visitors.
- Education: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and sufficient training to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.
- Experience: Six months to one year of custodial experience or equivalent training in custodial services is desirable. Fluency in Mandarin is desired.
- Credential/Certification: Possession or, or be enrolled in training to obtain, a current first aid and CPR certificate. SB 930 training desired.
Pay: $24.63 - $30.00 per hour
