Job Overview
The General Laborer supports daily operations in a cellulose manufacturing plant by performing a variety of physical and operational tasks. This role helps ensure safe, efficient production by assisting with material handling, equipment operation, housekeeping, and basic maintenance while following all safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Material handling
- Assist with loading, unloading, and transporting raw materials, chemicals, and finished products
- Load hoppers, conveyors, and feed systems; monitor flow to prevent jams
Sorting
- Actively monitor a fast-moving conveyor system to identify and remove unwanted items, debris, and nonconforming materials before they enter production
- Sort raw materials by hand to help ensure only acceptable materials are processed through the production line
- Safely remove contaminants such as plastic, metal, trash, oversized items, or other foreign materials from the conveyor
- Keep the sorting area clean and free of accumulated debris to support safe and efficient operations
Production support
- Support production processes such as baling, packaging, or shipping
- Assist operators with start-up/shutdown activities and routine changeovers
- Observe the line for blockages, spills, or abnormal conditions and report issues promptly
- Operate basic equipment and tools (e.g., conveyors, sorting lines, etc.) as trained
Packaging and palletizing
- Fill, weigh/check, seal, label, and stack bags to spec
- Build and wrap pallets; stage finished goods for shipping
Quality checks
- Perform basic checks such as bag weight/appearance, label accuracy, and lot/date coding
- Inspect materials and finished products for visible defects or contamination
- Collect samples for QC as directed; document results if required
Housekeeping and dust control
- Clean work areas, equipment exteriors, and floors; manage spills
- Keep dust collection areas clean (within training/authorization)
Basic maintenance assistance
- Support preventive maintenance tasks (e.g., cleaning screens, clearing minor clogs, changing simple wear parts) under supervision
- Identify and tag/report damaged equipment, leaks, or unusual noises/vibration
Shipping/receiving support
- Help load/unload trucks; verify counts and assist with paperwork as assigned
Safety and compliance
- Follow all safety procedures, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Follow lockout/tagout rules, machine guarding procedures, forklift/pedestrian rules, and chemical-handling instructions
- Participate in safety talks, incident reporting, and hazard identification
Documentation and communication
- Complete simple production, downtime, sanitation, and inspection logs
- Communicate status changes to leads/operators and coordinate with maintenance/QC
Required Skills/Abilities

Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Prior experience in manufacturing, industrial, or plant environments is a plus
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Willingness to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and overtime as needed
- Strong attention to safety and teamwork
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs. regularly
- Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with noise, dust, heat, chemicals, and moving machinery
- Ability to wear required PPE for extended periods
- Must be available to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends, as required to meet operational demands
Pay: From $19.00 per hour
