Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced CAD/BIM Design Drafter to develop detailed shop drawings, fabrication drawings, field-verification templates, 2D and 3D models, and other technical information required for the fabrication and installation of architectural sheet metal systems.
This position translates architectural and engineering contract documents into accurate, constructible, fabrication-ready drawings while maintaining design intent and incorporating company standards, fabrication methods, equipment capabilities, and field installation requirements. The ideal candidate combines strong construction-detailing skills with the ability to visualize how components will be fabricated, assembled, and installed, and can independently identify and resolve design and constructability issues while working within project schedules and budgeted hours.
Key ResponsibilitiesShop Drawings, Detailing & Modeling
- Review architectural, structural, engineering, and other contract documents to understand project scope, design intent, dimensions, materials, and requirements.
- Develop accurate, constructible shop drawings, fabrication drawings, 2D drawings, 3D models, and field-verification templates for architectural sheet metal systems.
- Incorporate company standards, fabrication methods, equipment capabilities, field conditions, and installation requirements into drawings and models.
- Review and incorporate internal, customer, and project-team comments and revisions.
- Verify completed drawings and models for accuracy, completeness, constructability, and readiness for fabrication.
Fabrication & Production Support
- Coordinate with Production and Programming personnel to ensure drawings and models are practical and fabrication-ready.
- Apply knowledge of materials, tolerances, fabrication methods, assembly requirements, and equipment capabilities during the detailing process.
- Prepare or assist with technical information required for CNC programming, bills of material, cut lists, panel cards, and fabrication packages.
- Assist in resolving fabrication issues by reviewing drawings, models, dimensions, and production requirements.
Field & Project Coordination
- Coordinate drawings and models with Project Management, Engineering, Production, Programming, and Field Installation teams.
- Identify conflicts, discrepancies, missing information, dimensional issues, and constructability concerns and communicate them to the appropriate project personnel.
- Incorporate field measurements, field conditions, and as-built information into drawings and models.
- Participate in project and coordination meetings and provide technical input related to detailing, fabrication, and installation.
- Assist in resolving field and installation issues through review of drawings, models, and actual site conditions.
- Learn and utilize 3D scanning and point-cloud technology as needed for field verification and modeling.
Project Delivery
- Manage assigned work to meet project schedules, deadlines, and budgeted hours.
- Communicate technical issues, schedule concerns, and resource needs before they impact project delivery.
- Maintain organized and accurate project drawings, models, files, and technical documentation.
- Identify opportunities to improve detailing, fabrication, coordination, and communication processes.
- Maintain working knowledge of relevant software, fabrication technology, construction practices, and industry methods.
Qualifications & Experience
- 3+ years of relevant drafting, detailing, design, or engineering support experience in construction, fabrication, architectural metals, manufacturing, or a related industry.
- Demonstrated experience producing detailed shop drawings, fabrication drawings, 2D drawings, and/or 3D models used for fabrication or construction.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or other CAD/BIM modeling software such as SOLIDWORKS, Autodesk Inventor, Fusion, or Revit.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, engineering, and construction drawings and specifications.
- Understanding of construction detailing, dimensions, tolerances, materials, fabrication methods, and constructability.
- Ability to visualize how components will be fabricated, assembled, and installed and translate that information into accurate, fabrication-ready drawings.
- Ability to identify drawing conflicts, missing information, dimensional issues, and constructability concerns.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage assigned work, meet deadlines, and work with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with architectural sheet metal, architectural metals, metal fabrication, or commercial construction.
- Experience preparing drawings or data for CNC fabrication equipment.
- Experience with laser cutting, routing, punching, bending, forming, or other automated fabrication processes.
- Experience with 3D scanning, point-cloud data, or field-verification technology.
