A member of the New Jersey General Assembly representing Morris and Passaic Counties is seeking a highly qualified, capable, and self-starting professional for a senior leadership position within the district office.

Position Overview
Reporting directly to the Assemblymember, the Chief of Staff / Legislative Director oversees the daily operations of the legislative district office and manages staff workflow to ensure the timely and effective completion of all legislative, communications, constituent, and district priorities.
This position serves as the Assemblymember’s senior advisor on legislative strategy, policy development, communications, constituent services, scheduling, and stakeholder engagement. The role requires exceptional judgment, discretion, organization, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced and high-pressure public service environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct and manage all day-to-day district office operations, including supervision of staff, assignment delegation, workflow management, and project completion.
- Conduct legislative research, policy analysis, and bill tracking across a wide range of state issues and initiatives.
- Draft and review constituent correspondence, speeches, press releases, statements, newsletters, social media content, briefing materials, talking points, and other official communications.
- Develop and execute communications and media strategies to effectively promote legislative initiatives, district priorities, and community engagement efforts.
- Coordinate and maintain the Assemblymember’s legislative, district, and community schedule, including meetings, public events, committee obligations, and stakeholder outreach.
- Serve as the Assemblymember’s representative at meetings, events, municipal functions, and public engagements throughout the district and state.
- Manage constituent relations and casework operations while ensuring responsive and professional constituent service.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with municipal, county, and state officials; advocacy organizations; nonprofit and business leaders; lobbyists; community stakeholders; and executive branch agencies.
- Interface regularly with legislative leadership offices, committee staff, caucus staff, state departments and authorities, and public and private sector representatives.
- Monitor emerging legislative, political, and district issues and provide strategic recommendations and solutions to the Assemblymember.
- Manage urgent and sensitive matters with professionalism, discretion, and sound decision-making under tight deadlines and changing priorities.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Master’s degree in related field preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in government, legislative affairs, public policy, communications, campaigns, or related fields.
- Prior experience in a legislative office, government affairs role, or project management environment strongly preferred.
- Supervisory or leadership experience preferred.

- Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly and concisely communicate complex policy matters to diverse audiences.
- Strong legislative research, analytical, and organizational abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple competing priorities simultaneously while maintaining close attention to detail.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and operate independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills with a professional and collaborative demeanor.
- Ability to anticipate challenges, think strategically, and proactively develop solutions.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions, evolving priorities, evening meetings, and occasional weekend events.
- Strong understanding of New Jersey state government, the legislative process, and public policy issues preferred.
Residency Requirement
New Jersey residency is required. Preference will be given to applicants residing within reasonable commuting distance of the district office.

Residency Requirement
The “New Jersey First Act,” N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), requires all new public employees to establish residency in the State of New Jersey within one (1) year of employment.
