GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Performs advance (senior-level) work safely driving and operating a tractor-trailer combo and dump trucks which may include (but is not limited to) the moving of specialized heavy construction equipment involved in the maintenance and construction of District facilities and projects. Works under general supervision with some latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Operates tractor-trailer combination, and dump-truck applying knowledge of commercial driving regulations, to transport and deliver equipment or materials to job sites throughout Hidalgo County.
Conducts daily checks of assigned truck and equipment.
Operates all the department’s trucks and civil construction equipment and tools at a proficient level.
Operates steel wheel rollers, rubber tire rollers, loaders, water trucks and similar equipment.
Provides minor equipment maintenance such as greasing suspension, checking hydraulic/brake fluid, oil, water, transmission and air pressure levels and cleans vehicles.
Submits daily activity report, haul tickets, and purchase receipts.
Must work outdoors in all weathers.
Operates dump trucks to haul asphalt, dirt, trash, rocks, sand, water and/or other designated materials to a jobsite or drainage projects.
Maintains truck log according to state and federal regulations.
Position blocks and ties rope around items to secure cargo for transport.
Cleans, inspects and services vehicle.
Operates equipment to load, unload, or disperse cargo or materials.
Assists in loading and unloading truck manually.
May be responsible for some lead responsibilities as assigned.
Regular attendance is a must.
Performs other work duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Graduation from a high school or equivalent (GED) preferred.
Minimum of two to three (2-3) years of experience in commercial driving or related field.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATION
Must have a valid current Texas motor vehicle operator’s license; Texas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required; CDL may require specialized endorsements depending on area of assignment.
Must be able to be insured by the District’s insurance carrier.
Positions requiring a CDL or positions of a safety sensitive nature are subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with federal regulations.
This position is subject to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse requirements, including queries for alcohol and drug violations. Applicants must be registered with the FMCSA Clearinghouse and will be required to provide consent for the County to perform a pre-employment query. Failure to comply with FMCSA Clearinghouse procedures may affect this application process.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance, skilled in using specialized heavy equipment in the prescribed manner.
Knowledge of the safe operation of the equipment used and of the provisions of the Texas Motor Vehicle Code relating to the operation of equipment/vehicles.
Ability to operate equipment effectively and safely.
Ability to perform strenuous work in all types of weather.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic math and apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written and/or oral instructions.
Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Bilingual (Spanish and English) with the ability to converse fluently in both languages preferred.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with other crew members.
May require interaction with other departmental supervisors and peers, other County agencies and staff, outside vendors or other professionals and community, state or federal agencies.
Knowledge of basic computer skills.
Ability to use basic computer technology to access the employee portal and operate District-issued electronic devices.
