ABOUT THE ROLE
Long Tail Logistics is launching at Station DMD2 immediately ahead of Peak season, with a realistic path to scale from 5 vans to 40 vans within the first 8 weeks of operation. That ramp speed is not typical, and it requires an Operations Manager who has already run a DSP station under pressure, not someone learning the fundamentals on the job.
This is a senior, high-autonomy version of the Operations Manager role. The Owner will be on-site for approximately 95% of operating days, but the role is built around a simple standard: the station must run at full standard, safety, and performance whether or not the Owner is physically present that day.
The Operations Manager owns the daily execution of the station: opening and closing operations, managing every Delivery Associate and Dispatcher, and being the first and primary point of contact for anything happening on the road. The Owner sets the systems, structures, leadership strategy, and frameworks the station runs on; the Operations Manager is responsible for consistent, high-quality execution of those systems every single day.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Daily Station Operations Open and close the station on scheduled days: pre-dispatch prep, load-out oversight, dispatch, mid-day pace monitoring, rescues, closeout, and post-trip inspection review Run daily safety briefings and standups Be capable of running a full operating day, start to finish, independently, including on any day the Owner is not on-site Control day-to-day operating costs, fuel, overtime, damage, waste, without cutting corners on safety Build and maintain a strong working relationship with Amazon station leadership; resolve day-to-day operational challenges alongside Amazon's on-site team
Scheduling & Resource Allocation Build and maintain the weekly driver and dispatcher schedule, matching staffing levels to route demand Solve same-day call-outs and coverage gaps without losing a route Plan staffing ahead of Peak, Prime Week, and other high-volume windows so the station is never caught short
Fleet & Vehicle Readiness Own daily fleet readiness: vehicle assignments, pre-trip and post-trip inspections, and grounding decisions when a vehicle isn't safe to run Coordinate maintenance scheduling, repairs, and rental or backup vehicle coverage so route capacity never depends on a vehicle that isn't ready Track vehicle condition and damage; document incidents properly and follow through to resolution
Team & Driver Management Manage all Delivery Associates and Dispatcher(s) on a day-to-day basis Be the primary point of contact drivers come to with problems, questions, or issues during the shift Monitor scorecard performance, safety events, and attendance daily, and coach in real time on the floor Communicate clearly when rolling out changes or new policies, explain the why, not just the what Route policy violations, safety incidents, and performance concerns that require formal action up to the Owner (documentation, write-ups, and termination decisions are handled by the Owner, not this role)
Hiring & Interviewing Conduct the majority of candidate interviews for Delivery Associates Provide a hire/no-hire recommendation on every candidate interviewed; this recommendation drives the final decision roughly 70-80% of the time, the Owner makes the final call and will only go against the recommendation if a clear, significant red flag is identified Assist the Owner in refining interview structure and candidate evaluation criteria as the team scales Not responsible for sourcing/recruiting marketing (the Owner owns candidate-generation systems and pipeline), new-hire onboarding, or driver training; some light onboarding support may be needed occasionally but is not a core function of this role
Safety & Compliance Enforce daily safety standards: Mentor and Netradyne review, and DOT-relevant compliance on the floor Ensure every route is covered and every driver is fit for the road before dispatch Escalate safety violations and at-risk patterns to the Owner promptly
WHAT THIS ROLE DOES NOT INCLUDE
- Administrative and back-office work (payroll processing, formal HR files, vendor management) New-hire onboarding and driver training as a primary function Formal discipline: write-ups, performance improvement plans, and termination decisions Recruiting marketing and top-of-funnel candidate sourcing systems
These stay with the Owner (or a separate role) so the Operations Manager's time is fully protected for daily execution, team management, and hiring.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Minimum 3 years of direct experience as an Operations Manager (or equivalent senior operational leadership role) Minimum 5 years working within an Amazon DSP environment in any capacity Demonstrated experience running daily station operations independently, including load-out, dispatch, and safety oversight, with minimal supervision Hands-on familiarity with core DSP tools: the Rabbit delivery app, Mentor, Netradyne, and the DSP Portal / scorecard reporting Strong track record on safety and scorecard performance in a prior DSP role Comfortable operating in a fast, high-pressure ramp environment, this station is scaling from 5 to 40 vans inside 8 weeks Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; able to pass Amazon-required background check and drug screening Reliable transportation to Station DMD2 in Edgewood, MD Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus, not required
SCHEDULE
- 4 days per week in normal operations, scheduled around opening and closing the station (full-day, start-to-finish coverage on those days) 6 days per week during Peak season and other high-volume windows (Prime Week, major surges) Early-morning availability required; occasional weekend and holiday coverage as the operation requires Reachable by phone or text during operating hours on scheduled days off, for real-time escalations Approximately 50 hours per week total commitment in normal operations, more during Peak
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- Base salary: $100,000 - $110,000 per year
- Relocation: a one-time $3,500 relocation budget for candidates relocating to the Harford County / greater Baltimore area
- Health, dental, and vision coverage, consistent with what is offered to all full-time Long Tail Logistics employees
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
This role exists to translate the Owner's systems and strategy into consistent, on-the-ground execution. The clearest measure of that is the station's Amazon scorecard performance:
- Minimum acceptable: 75% of weeks at Fantastic or Fantastic Plus Target / goal: 90% of weeks at Fantastic or Fantastic Plus
Performance against this standard, along with safety record, team retention, and reliability through the initial ramp and Peak, will directly inform the review and renewal conversation at the end of the initial term.
START DATE & TERM
- Start date: on or about September 24, 2026 (two weeks before Peak launch) Initial term: 5 to 6 months, with a formal performance review and renewal discussion at the end of that period Employment type: full-time, W-2, exempt
