Position Overview
Boat Specialists is seeking an experienced Marine Technician to join our Service team. This position is responsible for accurately diagnosing, servicing, and repairing marine outboard engines and related boat systems. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical and electrical knowledge, excellent troubleshooting abilities, and a commitment to completing quality work efficiently.
The Marine Technician will also serve as a technical resource to the Service department and help ensure repairs meet company and manufacturer standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, service, and repair marine outboard engines and related systems
- Perform routine maintenance, major repairs, engine preparation, and complete repowers
- Diagnose and repair DC electrical systems, charging systems, wiring, lighting, gauges, and instrument panels
- Install, repair, and troubleshoot marine electronics and accessories, including GPS, radar, VHF radios, stereo systems, underwater lighting, trim tabs, and related equipment
- Complete rigging, dash modifications, retrofits, and other boat-building projects
- Inspect and repair trailers and associated components
- Accurately identify the cause and extent of mechanical or electrical failures and communicate findings to the Service Advisor
- Complete assigned work within established timeframes while maintaining high-quality standards
- Perform quality-control inspections and confirm repairs are completed correctly
- Complete warranty repairs in accordance with manufacturer and company requirements
- Maintain accurate service documentation, including labor performed, diagnostic findings, and parts used
- Properly maintain company equipment and specialty tools
- Follow all company safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area
- Provide technical guidance and support to other technicians when needed
- Assist other departments as business needs require
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of marine outboard engines and related mechanical systems
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills
- Strong understanding of 12-volt DC electrical systems
- Ability to read and apply technical service manuals, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer procedures
- Ability to use diagnostic software, meters, and specialty testing equipment
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet established completion deadlines
- Professional communication and customer-service skills
- Must provide the personal hand tools necessary to complete assigned work; company specialty tools will be provided
Education and Experience
- Professional experience servicing and repairing marine outboard engines required
- Manufacturer certifications are highly preferred
- Experience with outboard diagnostics, repowers, rigging, marine electronics, and DC electrical systems preferred
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record required
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Ability to regularly stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, and reach
- Ability to safely work aboard boats, around water, on ladders, and in confined spaces
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
