The Horsemanship & Riding Instructor is a highly versatile team member responsible for delivering exceptional riding instruction while ensuring horses, riders, and equipment are prepared for every lesson.
This role combines teaching, horsemanship, horse handling, tacking station operations, and lesson logistics in a fast-paced environment where efficiency, safety, and teamwork are essential.
The ideal candidate enjoys staying active, can transition quickly between responsibilities, and is comfortable teaching one lesson, preparing horses for the next, and keeping the operation running smoothly throughout the day.
Horsemanship
- Teach proper horse handling, grooming, leading, tacking, untacking, and general horse care.
- Educate students on horse behavior, safety, and barn etiquette.
- Promote excellent horsemanship both on the ground and in the saddle.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Get horses ready for lessons and swap them between lessons.
- Teach private and group horseback riding lessons for riders of various ages and skill levels.
- Develop riders' confidence, balance, and horsemanship through structured instruction.
- Maintain a safe, positive, and engaging learning environment.
- Evaluate rider progress and communicate recommendations to management and families.
Tacking Station & Lesson Operations
- Oversee the daily operation of the tacking station.
- Ensure every horse is groomed, properly tacked, and ready before each lesson.
- Quickly swap horses between lessons to keep the schedule running on time.
- Prepare incoming lesson horses while previous riders are finishing.
- Assist riders with mounting, dismounting, and equipment adjustments.
- Verify proper saddle and bridle fit before every ride.
- Untack, cool down, and properly care for horses after lessons.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient tacking station throughout the day.
- Coordinate with instructors and barn staff to ensure horses are assigned and ready according to the lesson schedule.
Horse Care
- Monitor horses for signs of discomfort, injury, or behavioral changes.
- Communicate concerns promptly to management.
- Assist with basic horse care and daily barn operations as needed.
Customer Experience
- Welcome students and families professionally.
- Answer questions regarding lessons, horse care, and rider progression.
- Help create an organized, safe, and memorable experience for every client.
Qualifications
- Previous experience teaching horseback riding lessons.
- Strong horsemanship skills, including safe horse handling, grooming, and tacking.
- Comfortable working with beginner through intermediate riders.
- Ability to multitask and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills.
- Team-oriented with a proactive attitude and strong work ethic.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
