Position Summary:
The Lunch Monitor is responsible for ensuring a safe, respectful, and orderly environment for students during lunch periods. This includes supervising students in the cafeteria and/or designated lunch areas, assisting with transitions, enforcing school expectations, and fostering positive student behavior.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Supervise and assist students' orderly entry and exit to the cafeteria during lunch to a designated area.
- Actively supervise students during lunch to ensure a safe and respectful environment.
- Model and encourage appropriate behavior [ Polite Table manners]
- Reinforce school rules [Show empathy, Responsibility and Pride]
- Assist students with lunch-related needs (e.g., opening food items, finding seats).
- Address minor behavioral issues and refer major concerns or injuries to the appropriate school staff as needed.
- Encourage and teach and maintain cleanliness and organization in the cafeteria (e.g., wiping tables, ensuring students dispose of trash properly).
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with students and staff.
- Collaborate with other lunch monitors and school staff to create systems and protocols for maintaining a positive lunchroom culture.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Strong emotional intelligence—the ability to recognize, understand, and manage one’s own emotions while being attuned to and respectful of the emotions of others, especially children. This includes showing empathy, practicing patience, and responding calmly in challenging situations.
- Prior experience working with children in a school or youth setting.
- Ability to maintain order and discipline in a positive and respectful manner.
- Dependable, punctual, and able to follow directions.
- Ability to remain alert and responsive during supervision periods.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, and carry light materials for the duration of 30 minutes at a time.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Knowledge of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills preferred
