Position Summary
The Assistant Bakery Manager supports the Bakery Manager in overseeing daily bakery operations, ensuring high-quality products, excellent customer service, food safety compliance, and efficient department performance. This position assists with merchandising, production planning, inventory control, associate development, and achieving sales and profitability goals while maintaining a clean, safe, and customer-focused environment.
Key Responsibilities Department Operations
- Assist in managing daily bakery department operations and workflow.
- Support production planning to ensure product availability while minimizing shrink.
- Maintain department conditions that are clean, organized, and ready for business.
- Ensure products meet company quality standards and customer expectations.
- Monitor sales, production, and operational performance metrics.
Merchandising & Sales
- Execute bakery merchandising plans, promotional displays, and seasonal programs.
- Maintain attractive product presentations and proper product rotation.
- Ensure accurate pricing, signage, and labeling throughout the department.
- Identify opportunities to increase sales through product availability and presentation.
- Promote featured items and seasonal bakery offerings.
Inventory & Product Management
- Assist with ordering and inventory management to meet customer demand.
- Monitor inventory levels and manage product replenishment.
- Help control shrink through proper handling, rotation, and forecasting.
- Verify delivery accuracy and properly receive bakery products and supplies.
- Maintain organized storage areas and inventory records.
Leadership & Team Development
- Provide leadership and direction to bakery associates.
- Assist with scheduling, task delegation, and workload distribution.
- Support hiring, onboarding, and training of new associates.
- Coach associates on customer service, food safety, and operational standards.
- Foster a positive and productive team environment.
- Serve as acting department leader in the Bakery Manager’s absence.
Customer Service
- Deliver exceptional customer service and promote a customer-first culture.
- Assist customers with product selection, special orders, and bakery inquiries.
- Address customer concerns promptly and professionally.
- Ensure associates provide friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient service.
- Support special event and custom cake order processes when applicable.
Food Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, and health regulations.
- Maintain proper product handling, storage, and dating procedures.
- Conduct routine department inspections for cleanliness and safety.
- Follow all company policies, operational procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Report and correct safety concerns immediately.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous bakery, food service, grocery, or retail experience required.
- Prior supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
- Knowledge of bakery operations, food safety, and merchandising practices.
- Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Ability to bend, reach, push, pull, and perform repetitive motions.
- Ability to work in varying temperature environments including coolers and freezers.
- Ability to safely operate bakery equipment and tools.
