The Opportunity
Schedule: Monday-Friday, approximately 2:30 PM-6:30 PM during the school year, with additional opportunities during school holidays and summer programming.

The NYC Muslim Center (NYCMC) and Wellspring Schools are seeking enthusiastic, dependable, and caring Afterschool Childcare Leaders to join our new DYCD COMPASS After-School Program serving students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Afterschool Group Leaders become trusted mentors who help children build confidence, strengthen friendships, improve academically, and discover new interests through engaging daily programming.
Position Summary
The Childcare Lead is responsible for supervising and mentoring a consistent group of elementary or middle school participants during the after-school program. Working under the supervision of the Program Director and Content Specialist, the Childcare Lead creates a safe, welcoming, and structured environment while facilitating daily activities that promote learning, teamwork, leadership, creativity, and positive youth development. Childcare Leads serve as positive role models and are expected to actively engage with students throughout all program activities.
Essential Responsibilities
The Afterschool Childcare Lead will:
- Supervise and actively engage an assigned group of participants throughout the program day.
- Build positive, respectful relationships with youth and families.
- Facilitate structured enrichment activities developed by the Content Specialist and Activity Specialist.
- Support homework assistance and academic enrichment activities.
- Reinforce Social Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies through daily interactions.
- Encourage teamwork, leadership, creativity, and problem-solving.
- Maintain accurate daily attendance and dismissal records.
- Ensure participants are released only to authorized individuals following program procedures.
- Implement positive behavior management techniques that promote student growth and responsibility.
- Assist during snack service, transitions, recreation, special events, and field trips.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe classroom or activity space.
- Monitor participant safety at all times.
- Promptly report accidents, injuries, behavioral concerns, suspected abuse or neglect, safety hazards, and other incidents according to organizational policies.
- Communicate professionally with supervisors, families, school personnel, and fellow staff.
- Participate in required meetings, professional development, and training.
- Perform additional program-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Experience working with children or youth in schools, after-school programs, camps, recreation programs, childcare, tutoring, coaching, or similar youth-serving settings.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with youth from diverse backgrounds.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Associate's degree or higher in Education, Child Development, Recreation, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
- Two years of experience working with school-age children.
- Experience with DYCD, COMPASS, SONYC, SACC, youth development, or educational programs.
- CPR/First Aid certification.

Work Environment
Afterschool Childcare Leads work in classrooms, gyms, cafeterias, outdoor recreation areas, and community spaces throughout the program day. This position requires active supervision of participants and frequent movement between activity areas.
Physical Requirements
The position requires the ability to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Participate in indoor and outdoor recreational activities.
- Lift or carry materials weighing up to approximately 25 pounds.
- Bend, kneel, and assist students when needed.
- Supervise active play and recreational activities.
- Respond appropriately during emergencies.

Required Clearances & Training
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all required screenings and clearances, which may include:
- Background check
- Fingerprinting, where applicable
- State Central Register clearance, where applicable

Employees must successfully complete all required organizational, DYCD, and School Age Child Care (SACC) trainings upon hire and throughout employment. Required training may include:
- Child safety
- Mandated reporter responsibilities
- Emergency preparedness
- Behavior management
- Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
- Mental health awareness
- Inclusion of children with disabilities
- CPR/First Aid (if required)
- Additional trainings required by DYCD or NYC Muslim Center.
Pay: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour
