The Opportunity
Endemic is looking for a Biological Monitor to conduct compliance monitoring during construction and support environmental compliance in the field during nesting bird season, and for regulated and special-status species.
This role offers hands-on experience in applied conservation biology, contributes to preservation of resources throughout California, and provides meaningful field time for early to mid-career biologists seeking regulated and special-status species survey experience.

What You Will Do
- Conduct construction compliance monitoring
- Conduct nesting bird surveys
- Perform biological monitoring for nesting birds and other regulated and special-status species
- Monitor in-water work and conduct aquatic species relocations
- Produce daily reports
- Ensure client compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work and meetings.
- Travel for out-of-town projects as needed
- Work Location: Field sites are located in multiple locations across Humboldt County
- Hours can include night work and weekends
Minimum Qualifications
- Degree in biology, natural resource management, environmental studies, or a related field (equivalent experience will be considered)
- 2 years of experience as a professional biologist, including a minimum of one year of experience with an environmental consulting firm
- Experience in identifying and monitoring nesting bird behavior and nests
- Experience handling and identifying aquatic species
- The ability to navigate varied terrain, including uneven surfaces and slopes
- Experience using binoculars and spotting scopes
- Strong field skills, including navigation, observation, and defensible data documentation
- Proficienct at using Fieldmaps, Word, Adobe, Excel, Google Drive, amoungst other computer programs and phone applications
- Willingness to travel and remain overnight in hotels for short periods
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Reliable vehicle and car insurance
Preferred Experience
- Manage work assignments with team members, troubleshoot in the field
- Experience with conducting nesting bird surveys
- Experience handling fish, amphibians, and reptiles
- Plant and plant community identification skills for species common to California
- Experience working with construction/utility companies
- Survey experience with any of the following species: Chinook salmon, Coho salmon, Steelhead, Eluachon, Western Brook Lamprey, Pacific Lamprey, Southern Torrent Salamander, California Giant Salamander, Foothill yellow-legged frogs, Northern red-legged frogs, Coastal Tailed Frogs, Western Pond Turtle, Marbled Murrelet, Northern Spotted Owl, raptors, and migratory birds.
- Strong technical report writing skills
- Prior experience working in California, Utah, Arizona, or Nevada
- Field work in agricultural landscapes and remote locations
- Familiarity with CEQA, NEPA, and wildlife permitting requirements in California
Schedule and Pay
- Seasonal, hourly, non-exempt position
- $25.00 to $30.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience
- Work may involve early mornings, midday breaks, and weekend assignments, depending on survey timing and project needs (we plan and communicate well so that you can organize your season)
