Duties
- Review and process mental/behavioral health claims using DRG (Diagnosis-Related Group), CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes, ICD-9, and ICD-10 coding systems to ensure accurate billing.
- Verify insurance coverage and eligibility for patients, ensuring all necessary documentation is complete before submission.
- Prepare and submit clean claims electronically through EMR (Electronic Medical Records) or EHR (Electronic Health Records) systems, following payer guidelines.
- Manage medical collections by following up on unpaid or denied claims promptly and professionally.
- Maintain detailed and organized medical records, including documentation of billing activities, coding details, and correspondence with insurance companies.
- Collaborate with clinical staff to clarify diagnoses or procedures that impact billing accuracy.
- Stay current with updates in medical coding standards, including ICD coding changes and DRG adjustments, to ensure ongoing compliance.
Requirements
- Proven experience in medical billing within a mental or behavioral health setting; familiarity with medical office procedures is highly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of DRG classifications, CPT coding, ICD-9, ICD-10 coding systems, and medical terminology.
- Experience working with EMR/EHR systems for billing and record management.
- Excellent understanding of medical records management and documentation standards.
- Ability to interpret complex insurance policies and navigate medical collections processes effectively.
- Detail-oriented with exceptional organizational skills to handle multiple claims efficiently.
- Prior experience with medical coding audits or compliance checks is a plus.

Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented, reliable Medical Billing and Coding specialist to join our team in a part-time capacity, with space to grow into full time over 1-2 years as our organization grows. This position will be responsible for handling insurance verification for intakes, claim submissions and follow up, payment posting into EHR, and accounts receivable for clinical staff. This role is vital to ensuring timely reimbursement, best practices in client care, accurate financial management, and supporting the sustainability of our mission.
Pay: $22.00 - $30.00 per hour
