The Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Coach is responsible for providing leadership, instruction, and mentorship to student-athletes while promoting the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, and personal growth. The JV coach plays a vital role in developing student-athletes and preparing them to compete successfully at the varsity level while supporting the overall vision and philosophy of the Mill River Boys Basketball Program.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesProgram DevelopmentPlan and conduct organized, engaging, and developmentally appropriate practices.Teach basketball fundamentals, offensive and defensive concepts, and game strategy.Develop players' individual skills while fostering team play.Evaluate player progress and provide constructive feedback throughout the season.Prepare athletes for advancement into the varsity program.Team LeadershipPromote sportsmanship, respect, accountability, and teamwork.Establish clear expectations for player conduct, attendance, and academic performance.Serve as a positive role model for student-athletes both on and off the court.Foster an environment that encourages confidence, effort, and continuous improvement.Game ManagementCoach all scheduled contests while emphasizing player development and competitive growth.Prepare game plans and make in-game adjustments.Manage team equipment, uniforms, and locker room expectations.Ensure appropriate supervision of student-athletes during practices, games, and team travel.CommunicationMaintain positive communication with players, parents, school staff, officials, and the community.Collaborate regularly with the Head Varsity Coach to ensure consistency throughout the basketball program.Communicate schedules, expectations, and team information in a timely and professional manner.Administrative ResponsibilitiesFollow all Mill River Union High School, district, league, and Vermont Principals' Association (VPA) policies and procedures.Complete required eligibility, attendance, and athletic department paperwork.Assist with equipment inventory and end-of-season responsibilities.Attend coaches' meetings and professional development opportunities as requested.QualificationsPrevious basketball coaching and/or playing experience preferred.Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals and player development.Ability to motivate and mentor high school student-athletes.Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.Demonstrated commitment to educational athletics and character development.Ability to work collaboratively with coaches, administrators, students, and families.Required CertificationsCurrent or willingness to obtain NFHS Coaching Certification.CPR/First Aid Certification.Successful completion of all district-required background checks and employment requirements.Any additional certifications required by the State of Vermont or Mill River Union High School.ExpectationsThe Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Coach will: Uphold the mission and values of Mill River Union High School.Represent the athletic department with professionalism and integrity.Place the academic, athletic, and personal development of student-athletes at the forefront of all decisions.Support and contribute to a positive culture throughout the entire Boys Basketball Program.
