Medical Assistant — Neurosurgery
Colorado Brain & Spine Institute (CBSI) is seeking a detail-oriented and compassionate Medical Assistant to support a team of fellowship-trained neurosurgeons in a fast-paced clinical environment. This role is central to delivering an excellent patient experience, from intake through procedural support, for patients managing complex neurological and spinal conditions.
Position Summary
The Medical Assistant works directly with neurosurgeons and clinical staff to prepare patients for visits and procedures, room and triage patients, assist with clinical documentation, and ensure smooth day-to-day clinic operations. The ideal candidate is comfortable in a high-acuity specialty setting, communicates clearly with patients who may be anxious or in pain, and works well within a coordinated care team that includes front desk, scheduling, and billing staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Room patients and obtain vital signs, chief complaint, and relevant history prior to provider visits
- Prepare and sterilize exam rooms including stocking supplies
- Assist neurosurgeons and physician assistants during in-office procedures (e.g., suture/staple removal, wound checks)
- Document patient encounters accurately and in real time in the EHR (Athenahealth), including vitals, history, and provider instructions
- Coordinate retrieval of diagnostic imaging (MRI, CT, X-ray) and ensure prior records and films are available for provider review
- Communicate with patients regarding pre- and post-operative instructions under provider direction
- Triage patient phone calls and portal messages, escalating urgent neurological symptoms appropriately
- Assist with prior authorization and referral documentation in coordination with the billing and authorization team
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA and OSHA standards at all times
- Support medication reconciliation, prescription refill requests, and pharmacy communications under provider supervision
- Perform other clinical and administrative duties as assigned to support practice operations
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Strong communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with patients, families, and providers
- Ability to manage a fast-paced schedule with attention to detail and accuracy in documentation
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in neurosurgery, neurology, orthopedics, or another high-acuity surgical specialty
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program (Certificate or Associate's degree) preferred but not required
- Minimum 1 year of clinical experience in a medical office setting; specialty or surgical experience preferred but not required
- Proficiency with EHR systems (Athenahealth experience preferred)
- Familiarity with spine and cranial procedure terminology
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Frequent use of computer workstations.
Schedule & Compensation
Full-time, Monday–Friday, at multiple locations with clinic-based hours (no nights, weekends, or call). Compensation is commensurate with experience and certification, with a full benefits package including medical/dental/vision, paid time off, and 401(k).
Pay: $17.00 - $20.00 per hour
