Responsibilities
- Safely operate passenger buses according to traffic laws, vehicle codes, and transportation safety regulations, ensuring passenger safety at all times.
- Provide courteous customer service to students, parents, and school staff, maintaining clear communication and positive behavior management.
- Assist students with disabilities or special needs by providing wheelchair assistance and ensuring proper behavior management during transit.
- Follow emergency response procedures for transportation incidents, including emergency stop procedures and first aid protocols such as CPR.
- Conduct pre-trip inspections to verify vehicle safety, including checking brakes, lights, tires, and emergency equipment.
- Respond quickly to traffic changes or road conditions by adjusting driving routes or speeds to maintain schedule integrity.
- Maintain accurate records of daily trips, student counts, incident reports, and vehicle inspections in writing or electronic logs.
Experience
- Proven experience driving buses or transit vehicles, preferably including school bus driving or paratransit services.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, transportation safety regulations, and state/local commercial driving laws.
- Experience working with children or in environments requiring behavior management and student discipline.
- Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for school bus operation and passenger transport.
- First aid certification including CPR training is highly desirable; ability to respond effectively in emergency situations.
- Strong communication skills to interact confidently with students, parents, school personnel, and emergency responders.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting when necessary for securing equipment or assisting students with mobility needs.
