Job Summary
The Ophthalmology Technician assists ophthalmologists in providing high-quality eye care by performing diagnostic tests, preparing patients for examinations, and maintaining clinical equipment. This role requires excellent patient care skills, attention to detail, and technical proficiency in ophthalmic testing and imaging procedures. Keeping up to date with all the logs and assist in ordering supplies.
Key Responsibilities

Greet and prepare patients for eye examinations.

Obtain and record patient medical and ocular histories.

Set procedure room up using sterile technique, prior to each case

Measure visual acuity and perform preliminary testing such as:

Refraction and tonometry (intraocular pressure measurement)

Visual field testing
-
Optical coherence tomography (OCT)
-
Fundus photography and fluorescein angiography (if applicable)
-
Assist ophthalmologists with diagnostic and treatment procedures.

Administer eye drops or topical medications as directed by the physician.

Educate patients about eye care, medication use, and post-visit instructions.

Maintain and calibrate ophthalmic instruments and diagnostic equipment.

Ensure exam rooms are clean, stocked, and ready for patient use.

Document all procedures, test results, and physician notes accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR).

Support patient flow to ensure an efficient and positive clinical experience.

Ensure adherence to infection control, safety, HIPPA and Compliance
- Accurately labels any items with patient name

Adheres to sterilization procedures for all equipment and supplies

Checks equipment for proper functioning

Maintains adequate inventory of supplies

Performs other miscellaneous tasks and duties as assigned and within scope of practice
Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree preferred.

Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Ophthalmic Technician (COT) preferred; willing to train the right candidate.

Minimum 1–2 years of experience in an ophthalmology or optometry setting preferred.

Proficiency with ophthalmic diagnostic instruments and EMR systems.

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced outpatient environment.

BLS Certification
Physical Requirements

Ability to stand for long periods and assist patients of varying mobility levels.

Manual dexterity to handle delicate ophthalmic instruments.
-
Able to lift, carry and or transport up to 50lbs
