Job Summary
Lavelle School for the Blind is seeking an experienced Director of Personnel to lead Human Resources operations and support our dedicated staff serving students who are blind and visually impaired, including students with multiple disabilities.
The Director of Personnel will oversee recruitment, employee relations, benefits administration, compliance, onboarding, leave administration, policy implementation, payroll coordination, and HR strategy. This position works closely with school leadership to ensure a positive, supportive, and compliant workplace environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and oversight for all Human Resources operations and personnel records.
- Develop, implement, and maintain HR policies, procedures, employee handbooks, and personnel practices.
- Oversee recruitment, onboarding, hiring, orientation, retention, and separation processes.
- Direct and supervise background checks including SCR, SEL, fingerprinting, and employment verifications.
- Supervise and maintain employee personnel files and records.
- Oversee payroll preparation, attendance records, leave tracking, and payroll-related inquiries.
- Administer employee health benefits, retirement plans, leave programs, and related systems.
- Monitor employee certifications, licensures, and TEACH requirements and ensure compliance.
- Administer FMLA, Workers’ Compensation, Short-Term Disability, accommodations, and leave processes.
- Monitor attendance trends and oversee evaluations related to absenteeism and lateness.
- Conduct employee investigations, prepare reports, and support corrective action and disciplinary processes.
- Advise leadership regarding personnel matters, organizational issues, and staffing needs.
- Plan and facilitate staff trainings and orientation programs in collaboration with Leadership Team.
- Develop employee engagement and retention initiatives.
- Prepare HR reports and provide periodic updates to Leadership Team.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding employees and school operations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Advanced certifications such as SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP are a plus
- Five or more years of progressively responsible HR experience with supervisory responsibilities.
- Experience in school, nonprofit, educational, or human services settings preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of employment law, employee relations, benefits, leave administration, and compliance.
- Experience with payroll systems including ADP preferred.
- Strong written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to handle confidential matters with professionalism and discretion.
