The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF) is looking for hardworking, reliable, no-excuses individuals to join our Dog Care team.
SASF is a highly regarded, well-respected organization within the community and animal welfare sector. We hold ourselves to a higher standard, and we expect the same from every member of our team. This is a prestigious place to work for those who are serious about animal care and want to be part of a high-performing organization.
This role is physically demanding, fast-paced, and requires consistency, attention to detail, and accountability. It is not for everyone. If you are looking for an easy job or something casual, this is not the right fit.
If, however, you take pride in your work, show up every day ready to contribute, and genuinely care about animal welfare, we want to hear from you.
What the Role Involves
- Feeding, cleaning, walking, and handling dogs every day without exception
- Maintaining strict cleaning and sanitation standards across all kennel and shelter areas
- Safely handling dogs of all temperaments, including strong, reactive, or difficult dogs
- Monitoring animals closely and reporting any signs of illness or behavioral concerns immediately
- Supporting the team with all operational tasks — cleaning, laundry, stocking, waste removal, and general upkeep
- Preparing dogs for meet-and-greets and contributing to successful adoptions
What We Expect
- You show up on time, every time
- You work hard, even when it’s cold, hot, busy, or difficult
- You take responsibility for your role — no shortcuts, no excuses
- You are comfortable working in an environment that includes: Animal waste, cleaning chemicals, barking dogs, physical labor
- You can safely handle dogs and remain calm under pressure
- You work well as part of a team and maintain a professional attitude at all times
- You are available to work weekends and holidays
Growth Opportunity
For the right candidate, this position offers a clear pathway for advancement into dog training and behavioral support roles. Team members who demonstrate strong work ethic, consistency, excellent animal handling skills, and a commitment to learning will have the opportunity to grow within the organization and develop specialized skills in training and behavior.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to build a long-term career in animal welfare and dog care.
Minimum Requirements
- Ability to recognize when an animal is in distress.
- Physically capable of performing the demands of the role.
- Knowledge of basic animal behavior and proper methods of animal restraint.
- Willing to be exposed to bites, scratches, contagious diseases and animal wastes.
- Willing to work weekends and holidays.
- 2 Years of hands-on animal care/handling experience.
Why This Role Matters
This job is critical. The care we provide directly impacts the health, behavior, and adoptability of every dog in the shelter.
If the work is not done properly, the animals suffer. If it is done well, lives are changed — both for the animals and the families who adopt them.
