Software Engineer II
Department: Strategy & Technology
Reports To: Director of Technology
Position Summary
The Software Engineer II is a hands-on individual contributor who uses technology to solve real business problems, improve how work gets done, and find better ways to serve the organization. This role combines software engineering, automation, systems integration, and creative problem-solving to turn ideas and opportunities into practical, scalable solutions.
We’re looking for someone who naturally asks questions like:
“How do we make this possible?”
“Why are we doing it this way?”
“There has to be a better way.”
The right person for this role enjoys digging into complex problems, understanding how the business actually operates, and then figuring out how technology can make things simpler, faster, more accurate, or more scalable. You’ll have the autonomy to explore ideas, make decisions, build solutions, and see them through from concept to implementation and ongoing improvement.
As an individual contributor, you’ll own meaningful technology initiatives and develop a deep understanding of the systems and business processes you support. You’ll work closely with operational teams, business leaders, and other technology professionals, bringing your technical perspective to the table while also learning from the people closest to the work.
This position reports to the Chief Strategy Officer and works closely with the Director of Technology on architecture, security, infrastructure, and technology standards. These partnerships provide direction and support without limiting the creativity, ownership, and independent thinking expected from this role.
The ideal candidate is curious, resourceful, and comfortable navigating ambiguity. You don’t need every problem to come with a clearly defined solution. In fact, you enjoy the ones that don’t.
What You’ll DoBuild, Improve, and Solve
- Design, develop, test, deploy, and support software applications, integrations, automations, and internal tools.
- Turn business challenges and ideas into practical technology solutions.
- Look for opportunities to eliminate unnecessary manual work, simplify processes, and make information easier to access and use.
- Develop and maintain APIs, integrations, workflows, data solutions, and other technology that connects people, systems, and processes.
- Troubleshoot problems, dig into root causes, and make improvements that prevent the same issues from happening again.
- Balance speed, practicality, maintainability, and long-term value when making technical decisions.
Own Your Work
- Take ownership of assigned systems, solutions, and initiatives from idea through implementation and ongoing improvement.
- Develop a strong understanding of the business processes and people behind the technology you support.
- Make day-to-day technical decisions with appropriate autonomy and accountability.
- Keep solutions well-documented and understandable so that knowledge is shared rather than siloed.
- Think beyond the immediate request and consider how solutions can scale and create value over time.
Partner With the Business
- Work directly with operational, analytics, revenue cycle, IDR, and other business teams to understand challenges and uncover opportunities.
- Ask questions, challenge assumptions, and help teams think differently about what technology can make possible.
- Translate business needs into thoughtful, maintainable technical solutions.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to test ideas, iterate on solutions, and learn what works.
- Help identify opportunities where technology can improve productivity, visibility, accuracy, and the overall employee experience.
Collaborate and Share Ideas
- Work closely with the Chief Strategy Officer, Director of Technology, engineers, and business leaders to turn priorities into action.
- Bring your ideas and technical perspective to conversations rather than simply waiting for requirements to be handed down.
- Collaborate with other engineers and stakeholders to build solutions that work well across systems and teams.
- Participate in technical discussions, design reviews, and problem-solving sessions.
- Share knowledge, approaches, lessons learned, and new ideas with the broader team.
Keep Looking Forward
- Stay curious about emerging technologies, development practices, automation tools, and new ways of solving problems.
- Explore new approaches when existing ones aren't working well.
- Look for ways to improve not only the technology, but the processes surrounding it.
- Continuously ask: What could be better? What could be simpler? What could we automate? What could we make possible that isn't possible today?
What We’re Looking ForRequired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent professional experience.
- 5+ years of professional software development experience.
- Experience taking software solutions from concept and design through implementation, deployment, and ongoing support.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, system design, integrations, APIs, and modern development practices.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and move initiatives forward with minimal direction.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical people.
- Experience working directly with business stakeholders to understand problems and develop solutions.
- Experience in healthcare technology, revenue cycle management, claims processing, medical billing, or healthcare operations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing workflow automation and business process improvement solutions.
- Experience working with integrations, APIs, data pipelines, and enterprise applications.
- Experience owning systems or technology domains and thinking about their long-term evolution.
- Experience as a senior engineer, technical lead, or similar individual contributor role.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Power Platform, workflow automation tools, and modern cloud technologies.
How We’ll Know You’re Making an Impact
Success in this role isn't simply about the number of projects completed or tickets closed. It's about the problems you help solve and the possibilities you help create.
You’ll be successful when you:
- Build solutions that make work easier, faster, more accurate, or more scalable.
- Turn manual or inefficient processes into thoughtful technology-driven solutions.
- Take an idea or problem and move it toward a working solution.
- Improve the reliability, usability, and maintainability of the systems you support.
- Build strong relationships with the people who rely on your work.
- Bring new ideas and perspectives to the organization.
- Make meaningful improvements to existing systems rather than accepting “the way we've always done it.”
- Know when to ask, “How do we make this possible?” and when to challenge the assumption that something has to be done the way it is today.
The Kind of Person Who Will Thrive Here
This role is a great fit for someone who likes to build, explore, question, and improve.
You may be the person who sees a five-step manual process and thinks, “Why are we doing all of this?”
You may be the person who hears, “The system can't do that,” and responds, “Okay… but what if we tried this?”
You may be someone who gets genuinely excited about finding a cleaner solution to a problem that everyone else has simply learned to work around.
If you’re curious, collaborative, technically capable, and motivated by making things better, we want you to bring that mindset here.
