We are seeking to contract Board Certified/Board Eligible Psychiatry Physician to provide comprehensive psychiatric services for our military Veterans through a long-term VA Medical Center (VAMC) contract.
- Schedule: Full-time; weekday and/or weekend/holiday coverage
- Weekday Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
- Weekend/Holiday Hours: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

- Additional Location: One provider may be required to provide services at the Virginia Beach Community Based Outreach Clinic, 244 Clearfield Avenue, Virginia Beach, VA, 23462
- Call: After-hours call-back coverage is required as scheduled
- Weekend/Holiday After-Hours: Telephone consultation and call-back responsibilities
- Pay: $195-205 hourly weekdays (Pro-rated for weekends/holidays)
The VA requires three Psychiatry Physicians for weekday coverage and one physician for weekend and Federal holiday coverage.
Contract Description/Overview:
Your services will support the Veterans Health Administration and Hampton VA Healthcare System by providing high-quality, comprehensive psychiatric care to our nation’s Veterans.
The ideal physician will have experience providing psychiatric services across outpatient, inpatient, and emergency department settings and be comfortable collaborating with VA mental health professionals and other members of the healthcare team.
This is a long-term VA contract opportunity with consistent scheduled hours and the opportunity to provide meaningful psychiatric care to Veterans.
- Provide professional Psychiatry Physician services onsite at the Hampton VA Healthcare System.
- Provide comprehensive psychiatric care across outpatient clinics, inpatient services, and emergency department consultations.
- Evaluate, diagnose, and manage psychiatric conditions and develop appropriate treatment plans.
- Perform admissions, discharge/transfer services, post-discharge follow-up, and required histories and physicals.
- Evaluate new patient referrals and provide care to severely mentally ill patients.
- Provide timely treatment and complete all required medical-record documentation.
- Conduct diagnostic assessments, medication renewals, suicide-risk assessments, and crisis interventions in outpatient and emergency department settings.
- Provide oversight and clinical direction to Residents, Interns, Medical Students, and Advanced Practice Providers when applicable.
- Collaborate with VA Mental Health staff and other healthcare professionals in providing patient care.
- Maintain accurate and complete documentation utilizing the VA's electronic medical record/CPRS system.
- Maintain compliance with applicable VA policies, procedures, privacy requirements, credentialing requirements, and standards of care.
The contract estimates approximately 95% of the physician's time will involve direct patient care. Weekday psychiatrists are expected to provide coverage for approximately 12–15 patients per psychiatrist per day. Weekend/holiday inpatient coverage may include up to 40 patients.
Schedule & Call Responsibilities:
Normal working hours are 8:00 am - 4:30 pmThe contract provides for three Psychiatry Physicians working Monday through Friday and one Psychiatry Physician providing coverage on weekends and Federal holidays.
After-hours responsibilities include:
- Call-back coverage for psychiatric care as scheduled.
- Weekend and Federal holiday evenings: availability for telephone consultations with attending physicians and nurses.
- After-hours consultations may involve medication management, psychiatric emergencies/crises, restraints and seclusions, patient transfers, clarification of orders, and general patient-care questions.
- Remote access to the medical record from home may be authorized.
- When an onsite callback is necessary, the physician must be able to return to the hospital within one hour of the call-back request.
- Monthly call schedules will be prepared for Mental Health emergency coverage.
Education/Qualifications:
Qualified candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Physician trained and experienced in Psychiatry.
- Must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry.
- Must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
- Must maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Must possess the education, training, clinical competency, and technical proficiency necessary to independently provide psychiatric services.
- Must successfully complete all applicable VA credentialing and privileging requirements before providing clinical services.
- Must possess or obtain an appropriate National Provider Identifier (NPI).
- Must provide a current DEA certificate.
- Must be able to speak, understand, read, and write English fluently.
- Must complete required VA training and maintain applicable continuing medical education requirements.
- Must comply with VA Medical Staff Bylaws, policies, procedures, privacy requirements, security requirements, and standards of care.
- U.S. citizenship is required for proposed candidates under the solicitation's technical submission requirements.
