DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL: Person-Centered Independent Living and Community Support
We are a small, locally run supported living service agency. Our administrative team has longstanding relationships with the individuals we support and stays in regular communication with both clients and staff, providing guidance and support to the team as situations arise. We are seeking Direct Support Professionals who value respectful, relationship-based support.
We support individuals living in Eureka, Arcata, and McKinleyville, with coverage needed across daytime, evening, and overnight hours. Depending on your availability and interests, staff may support one or more individuals, allowing schedules to develop in a way that works well for both you and the people we support.
Support is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays, with common shifts including day shifts (approximately 8am–3pm), evening shifts (3pm–10pm), and overnight shifts (10pm–8am). Overnight shifts are typically sleep shifts, where staff are able to sleep while remaining available if support needs arise.
Fill-in shifts are also available, which can work well for people who appreciate the flexibility of picking up extra hours as they become available.
We place strong value on intentional staff/client matching. When pairing staff and clients, we consider personality, communication style, shared interests, and the potential for a respectful and positive connection.
Because the people we support rely on consistent relationships and routines, dependable staff and clear communication within the team are especially important.
The shifts listed below reflect current openings, though schedules may evolve as individual needs and team availability change. For staff who are a good fit, there may be opportunities to add hours or support additional individuals over time.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
Radiant Living is hiring Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) to provide one-on-one support to adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities who live in their own homes and participate actively in their communities.
Individuals we support have a wide range of needs. Some are highly independent and lead active lives, while others require more consistent support with daily living and health needs. We are currently hiring for roles that include both types of support.
The role of a Direct Support Professional requires flexibility, emotional maturity, and a commitment to honoring each person’s voice as they live a meaningful life shaped by their own needs, values, and decisions.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
DSP responsibilities vary depending on the individual’s needs and lifestyle, but may include:
Supporting health and medical needs, including
- Medication administration
- Attending and facilitating medical and dental appointments
- Assisting with mobility, transfers, and personal hygiene
Supporting household and daily living tasks such as
- Cooking and meal preparation
- Cleaning, laundry, and household maintenance
- Grocery shopping and errands
Facilitating community inclusion, such as
- Encouraging involvement in hobbies, social groups, or fitness activities
- Transportation to and support at events, appointments, classes, or recreational activities
Supporting skill development and personal goals, which may include
- Communication, budgeting, literacy, cooking, and problem-solving
- Facilitating social connections and independent decision-making
- Providing emotional and behavioral support using person-centered and positive behavior practices
- Maintaining accurate documentation and participating in team communication, trainings, and staff meetings
EXAMPLES OF ACTIVITIES:
DSPs may find themselves:
- Accompanying someone on a nature walk or community hike
- Assisting with art, gardening, or cooking projects
- Supporting calm indoor routines such as reading, meditating, or listening to music
- Helping prepare for a camping trip or recreational outing
- Engaging in light exercise, gym visits, or swimming
- Driving to medical appointments or visits with family
- Riding horses
QUALIFICATIONS (Required):
- Must currently reside in Humboldt County (Eureka / Arcata / McKinleyville area)
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must pass a DOJ fingerprint background check
- Clean driving record (including no DUIs within the past five years)
- Reliable personal vehicle in good working condition (for use during shifts)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to follow detailed support plans and safety protocols
- COVID-19 vaccination required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (Not Required):
- Experience working with individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities
- Background in social services, caregiving, education, psychology, or healthcare
- Familiarity with person-centered planning or positive behavior supports
